After I spilled hot coffee all over my brand new keyboard, I got the bright idea that since this Summer has been so unbelievably hot around the country, perhaps it would be interesting to hear what the weather was like back in 1977. After all, the snow will be here sooner or later and you can put your AC unit away for the year.
What you will hear in this 24 hour composite is quite unbelievable. Some of us are old enough to remember just how bitter the winters were in 1977, 78, 79 right up through about 1983. But it’s different when you HEAR the radio announcer say it’s going to be 15-30 BELOW zero! How long has it been since the East coast had to suffer though that? Lets not get into Global Warming, but yes. There was a time when it was so cold, you could lose feeling in your hands just trying to warm the car up for work.
This is eye popping stuff! Be sure to listen to this next January 28th and compare the weather. Was it REALLY this damn cold? Apparently so…

How well I remember those days. I’ve lived all my life in Fairmont, West Virginia, which is about 90 miles south of Pittsburgh, and , boy, did this aircheck bring back some unpleasant memories. I’m 55 now and was in the eighth grade then, and that’s the roughest winter I remember. The following winter wasn’t a heckuva lot milder, but still… I’d forgotten the Hills department store jingle at the beginning until just now, for decades. Was that Jack Bogut at the beginning? Thanks for this ‘check.
Jack Bogut is the announcer on this aircheck. I found this cassette recording in a thrift store in Pittsburgh probably over twenty years ago and dubbed it for various friends. It’s great to finally see it on line!
Larry Berg? No Trish Beatty or Joel Zell on after Art Pallan? I was 12 at the time and remember this. Larry Berg came down from WBUT in Butler {I think) to fill in. Jack and Art sound great on here!
I found this tape in a Pittsburgh area thrift store back in the early 1990s. Whoever recorded it appeared to have been a science teacher as there were tapes of him reading lessons mixed in with recordings of various – mostly public – radio stations, particularly WUSF in Tampa. There’s also a CBS Mystery Theater broadcast from KMOX.
All of the tapes were cryptically labeled and were recorded on cheap low-quality cassette tapes. One labeled simply “moon” is TV audio of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
