John Vidaver on WYNY New York | 1978 (2:58)

This is short, but it does illustrate the soft rock sound that personified NBC’s FM station in New York. WYNY went through many changes and featured many well known jocks in the late 70s and early 80s… it was home for a while to ‘Cousin” Bruce Morrow, Steve O’Brien – even former WBZ Boston legend Bruce Bradley. But John Vidaver? Someone in New York City will remember. Anyway, enjoy this from the 2002 archives from before the Country format, before the flip to 103.5… and a time when soft rock was a popular FM format.

  1. John Vidaver was one of the original jocks on the new WYNY Movin’ Easy Y97 along with Herb Barry, Don Reynolds, Mitch Lebe, Bree Bushaw, and the original PD was Craig Simon. John has also worked at WCBS-FM, Beautiful Music WPAT-FM, WPIX-FM, WHLI-AM and others. John was known for his smooth voice and delivery along with the ability to do any format of the day.

this particular aircheck of john vidaver is worth checking out not only because of his easy going style as a radio presonality, but also the musical selections and artists that appear on this aircheck could give any listener the initial impression that they were listening to an AOR station instead of a soft rock station. the current release of billy joel 52nd street was a featured album at that time. you will also hear briefly from steely dan, blood sweat and tears, janis ian, and dan fogel berg . all of these artists were staples on AOR STATIONS in the early to mid -seventies. in new york wplj 95.5 fm formerly “new york’s best rock” played alot of the tracks featured on this aircheck. as time progressed, i do remember wyny playing easy listening type cuts from the bee gees, the commodores, and juice newton. you can definetely make the distinction between AOR AND SOFT ROCK when you factor in songs from those artists.
