Gary Evong, CFDR “780 Kixx Country” Halifax, NS | August 4, 1998

Our first listen to radio in the Canadian Maritimes brings us to CFDR Halifax. Known as 780 Kixx Country, this is a fully staffed, full service station with all the programming elements that make up good radio. No jingles, but plenty of classic Country liners. A full news and sports report. As your webmaster recalls from listening to Canadian AM Country stations, the AC-ish approach was and maybe still is typical.

I know next to nothing about Halifax radio so perhaps one of our listeners can fill in the details.

  1. You may want to fix the date on this. I believe it was from 8/4/98, not 89.

  2. This aircheck is not from August 1989 but is from August 4, 1998. This is because of the news report mentioning Sherri Lewis’ death as well as the mention of the top movies at the box office. Also, this is because in 1989 CFDR had a CHR format. They did not become country until late 1993. The station still has the Classic Country format today but is now owned by Rogers Media and they are planning to flip to FM. The newsman, Rich Horner, is still in Halifax radio working as news director for stations CFRQ-FM and CKUL-FM. Sports man Harv Stewart was also doing sports for CFRQ-FM during this time but left in 2008. I’m not sure what Gary Vaughn is doing today but mornings are now done by Frank Lowe. Hope this helps.

  6. Hi – Around Mother’s Day every year I hear a song about I owe you Mom and at the end of the song the singer says I Love You Mom. It is by a female singer but I don’t remember who it is? Wonder if you can help me out. Thanks.
