MicroCheck: 610 KFRC Top Hour Transition | November, 1976

Absolutely the shortest aircheck ever featured on this website, your webmaster couldn’t resist putting up a 41 second recording of KFRC in 1976 featuring Big Tom Parker’s signoff and the start of Mucho Morales’ (WHTZ, as JoJo Morales) show. And, it’s a DUAL, AM/FM combo ID you hear at the top of the hour!

Gosh, we LOVE KFRC on this site… after all, your webmaster based his Amateur Vanity Callsign on it! Please, somebody do a TOH ID for K1FRC! Beau Weaver (KFRC, KNUS, KHJ) is W6KHJ…. I’m jealous HAHA.

  1. KFRC and KFRC-FM simulcasted from 12 Midnight until 9AM…meaning you could hear Dr. Don Rose on FM and in stereo.

The call letters were KFRC-FM from 1960 to 1968, when it became KFMS, running Drake-Chenault’s automated “HitParade” format. In 1972, the call letters changed to KKEE and the format to automated oldies, then back to KFRC-FM in September, 1973 as “Golden Stereo 106″. It was a simulcast from 6PM to 6AM until January 1, 1974, when the simulcast hours were shifted to 9PM-9AM.

In ’74, Don Sainte-Johnn was brought in to program a gold-based adult contemporary called “K-106″ during the 12 hours not simulcast.

RKO sold KFRC-FM to Century Broadcasting. It became album rock KMEL on July 1, 1977. KFRC was without an FM sister station until the 1990s.

  2. Gotta remove that link, Jeff.

Mucho Morales and Jo Jo Morales are two different guys.

Mucho went from KFRC to KHJ, Los Angeles. After that, KRLA, KGFJ, Magic 106, Power 106, The Beat and 92.3 Hot FM. He does fill-ins there and is currently on Westwood One’s Oldies Channel.

JoJo Morales just started doing mornings in Charlotte this past Tuesday (January 12, 2010).

Seriously, dude…the same machine you post the wrong information about stations and jocks with can get you the right information in 30 seconds.

  3. Actually listening to the airchecks can’t hurt either…I’d never heard JoJo before and just clicked the link…he and Mucho sound nothing like each other.
