106.1 KPLM / Palm Springs

Tom Anthony, KPLM Palm Springs | August 5, 1994

From Country Music’s heyday of the 1990s, we go far out west to Palm Springs, where its 89 degrees (f) at 8 in the morning! Yes, it gets warm early in this oasis town in the middle of desert sand, and Country music was heard even here in 1994.

The station is known as “Palm Country 106” and according to your webmaster, is the only other station using this particular set of jingles that he’s heard, other than those in use from 1994-1996 at 103.7 KOUL Corpus Christi. He’s sure there were plenty of others who did, however…

Tom Anthony is filling in the morning show for Jim West. Ford Michaels does news, and you’ll hear one and a half newscasts in this full aircheck that spans just shy of one hour twenty minutes in length. We think it’s important to showcase this one in its entirety, partly because this is typical of most Country stations around the U.S. and Canada in the mid-90s that helped propel Country music to the top of all music genres for the first and probably only time (so far) in history. Garth was in his prime, the big hit makers were artists like Pam Tillis, Ricky Van Shelton, Randy Travis, The Judds and Travis Tritt. It was a huge time in Country music and for Country Radio.

KPLM today still plays Country music, and identifies as “Big 106”.

Hear it again now. Just click the play arrow below, then comment on your memories of KPLM, or the Country station of your choice as you remember it. And visit us on Facebook & Twitter, and leave your thoughts as this posts to the world of social media.

  1. When I’m looking for the latest country music, I always end up in one spot – 103.1 WIRK. I was even lucky enough to catch up with Keith Van Allen in the streets and got free ‘Rib Round Up’ tickets. Just one of the many events that keep me tuned into http://www.wirk.com
