Date of Recording: 1984 (exact date unknown) Station: 102.9 WDRC-FM Hartford, Connecticut Featured Air Personality: Ken Gilbert Contributor: Ken Gilbert Date of Contribution: 08.12.2016 Aircheck Entry: 1,430 Comments: “Every hour Music Means Money on Big D 103, Hartford’s Oldies Authority…” Every great radio station gets it start somewhere. Some made an abrupt format change that caught listeners unaware. Others made a slow turn. WDRC-FM was the natural blossom of its highly successful AM sister station. 1360 WDRC had a number of slogans over the years, “You’re never far from a friend”, “Where Your Friends Are” WDRC, Hartford’s Big D” and such. Some personalities would go on to become very well known, such as Dick Robinson, w...

Old Gold 1971 Remastered, Part 1 of 4

Going WAY back to the beginning of this website – well, okay, WAY back to the days when the radio industry trade circulated audio specials on vynl, here’s a completely re-mastered copy of one of the very first exhibits we had on airchexx way back in 2002! Old Gold was actually a vynl print – well, one could find it on vynl and on cassette in later years. The original copy we had obtained was on a worn out cassette and very muffled, but back then we were happy to post anything. Now, taken right from the record itself, a copy of Old Gold 1971. I’m posting this in four parts for easier listening. Beware, the vynl skips about 3 minutes in, during the WWDJ aircheck.. but not badly. Contained in this segment, in this order: WFIL Philadelphia – Dan Donovan KTSA San A...

Happy New Year! – From 1360 WDRC Hartford | January 1, 1978

From Contributor Steve Tefft, who writes: (This) is from Otis in the Nighttime of WDRC fame. Recorded about 12:30 AM, January 1, 1978(again, New Year’s Eve). Otis obviously had a few before taking the mic. Happy New Year! Another lesson from the days of live, local radio, don’t drink and jock! Aircheck #1,316 since May 2, 2002!

Ron Landry, 1360 WDRC Hartford | June 18, 1965

What New England radio stations come to mind when you think back to the 1960s? Certainly, anyone within the signal contour of New York’s WABC remember, but the big stations in Connecticut and Massachusetts doing Top 40 radio included Boston’s 1510 WMEX, WBZ 1030, and by 1967, WRKO. In Hartford, WPOP on 1410 was in the format, as were other stations in Waterbury, Norwich and New Haven. The largest station in Hartford in 1965 was also the first radio station put on the air in the state. Here’s Ron Landry on WDRC AM 1360 from 6/18/65. In 1965, Top 40 radio had screaming jocks and rarely played more than two songs in a row, in fact, if you listen closely you won’t find two records back to back at all. Now, its been said, accurately, that most disc jockeys on Top 40 radi...

Ken Gilbert, WDRC-AM 1360 | July 1983

Date of Recording: 07.xx.1983 (Exact Date Unknown) Station: 1360 WDRC (AM) Hartford, Connecticut, USA Format: Top 40/Oldies (In-transition) Featured Air Personality: Ken Gilbert (WAQY, WTIC-FM, WDRC, WDRC-FM, WKNE-FM, WDOT, WZRT, WVAA, WVTK) Contributor: Ken Gilbert Comments: Our friend Ken Gilbert sent in another goodie! WDRC (Big D, as it was affectionately known) was, by 1983, primarilly an Oldies station. This wasn’t some cheap imitation of an FM, however… as tape restorian Paul DiMarco (who provided the original copy to Ken Gilbert) wrote: I know times have changed but this is (absurd) !!! I’d listen to this type of radio before anything else on today’s dial….and it’s AM !!! ….not only is the DJ one of the best anywhere…..there’s s...

New Year Predictions – 1360 WDRC Hartford | December 31, 1975

These dire, yet hardly believable predictions for the new year 1976 were made by the WDRC News Department. Imagine listening to this and hearing a prediction that then President Ford was going to be shot! Its amazing this stuff made it to air! Contributor Steve Tefft sent this in, in time for New Years but a glitch on our end kept it off till Jan. 2. This runs six minutes, but you’ll enjoy every minute!
