KCBQ was in the midst of morphing from what it was in the 60s to what it became – a 70s powerhouse Top 40 station known for its one shotgun jingle, and what became known as the “Q” format.

This is Bobby Ocean’s KCBQ. You hear a jock who sounds, if one could draw an analogy, much like Dick Robinson of WDRC fame. Its the voice and personality. The news guy sounds a bit like Terrence McKeever (WHBQ, KOUL), but nobody identifies themselves, just the music. Lots of promos that mention the new Q, and one which reminds listeners to send in the list of voices to name in the “Guess Who Q” contest. No wonder nobody says their name!

Does anybody remember this contest? Was it a format change of sorts? New staff hirings? We just don’t know, but someone out there does… so thats what our comment feature is for.
From the Summer of ‘73, here’s wildman Rich Brother Robin apprearing in what sounds like his return to KCBQ (we never knew he left!). Perhaps he’d just been on vacation. No matter, Rich Bro is the poster child for high energy Top 40. Right up there with Jack Armstrong, Bill Lee and other screamers, Rich Brother Robin doesn’t let us down in this nine-plus minutes of scoped AM Top 40 heaven.

It really didn’t get much better than KCBQ in ‘73. This is more proof.

Returning to the Robyn Watts collection, here’s a refreshing look at the San Diego market from one of those border blaster stations, er, well one of those FM stations that didn’t have to worry about the non commercial restrictions imposed on US stations broadcasting from 88.1 to 91.9 MHZ. Sure, it’s really in Tijuana, but the studios of this CHR station are squarely in San Diego proper.

This station really sounds like it coulda been programmed from New York City. Awesome production elements are heard all throughout… great imaging, a tight presentation, and Eddie Martinez sounds fantastic. Yes, your webmaster always knew that the San Diego market was the west’s best kept secret. You’ll really love this, originally recorded by East Coast Airchecks – an entity that apparently no longer exists, but one that Robyn Watts graciously donated to our archives. Thanks again, Robyn!

Remastered

KCBQ featured one shotgun jingle – heard often enough on this 10 minute composite, but always well placed after one of Tuna’s jokes. Charlie Tuna is… well, himself, sounding comfortable and every bit as good as in L.A… with those pipes! Didn’t he and Charlie Van Dyke share a cellar somewhere?…

I’m not going to offer an opinion of this aircheck, just present what was created all those years ago. Included are a few acutal airchecks, a few great PAMS KCBQ jingles, a few phoners, and a ton of narration by the jock.

Your comments, please.

This aircheck comes to us from Alan Beebe via Matt at Big Apple Airchecks. As the story goes, Beebe gave it to Matt a couple of years ago, and Matt is resending it back to Beebe (and us) since he lost everything in his aircheck collection in Hurricane Katrina. Someone else to remember in your prayers for hurricane victims.

About this aircheck… While we have a couple of samples of ‘Magic 91′ on this site, not much explanation of the station itself. According to Alan Beebe (through Matt), KMJC was programmed by Kevin Metheny (who later went, with Beebe, to WNBC New York). ‘Magic 91′ apparently was rather short lived, on the air about four years total.

Your webmaster heard from a truly great jock back around Easter Weekend and I’d like to share some of it with you, along with a great aircheck from him at Q-106 San Diego from the golden days of 80s CHR!

JoJo Kincaid is featured elsewhere on this site, doing his thing on WVBF Framingham/Boston from 1978. Strangely enough, it appears he didn’t know the aircheck even existed and got a chance to remember some good times in Boston. JoJo writes:

Thanks for the link to VBF in ‘78! I don’t have a lot of stuff from that era…this is fabulous. I’ll snag it with Cool Edit and do a little EQing and speed adjustment…should work great!

Also, a boatload of thanks for your very kind comments. Those were great days at F-105 (don’t forget what the “F” stands for) even though my welcoming present to Boston was the Blizzard of ‘78! I have a picture taken in the mid 90’s of Mighty Mike, Pete Falconi, The Doctor and myself which hangs proudly in the radio shack here.

I’ve attached some JoJo radio from San Diego for your collection. Hope you have fun with it. I sure did!!

Take care and thanks again for everything, bro…please stay in touch.

JoJo Cookin

Now, there’s more to this story than just JoJo sending us a copy of this aircheck. The copy he sent in, he recorded from his computer off a recording made by Les Durant which was posted at another website.. Les wrote to say that HE recorded this aircheck while living in Ramona. Les was kind enough to send in the high-quality original copy.

So now, here it is – parts one and two of our good friend JoJo Kincaid on Q-106! – In Stereo
