Absolutely the shortest aircheck ever featured on this website, your webmaster couldn’t resist putting up a 41 second recording of KFRC in 1976 featuring Big Tom Parker’s signoff and the start of Mucho Morales’ (WHTZ, as JoJo Morales) show. And, it’s a DUAL, AM/FM combo ID you hear at the top of the hour!

Gosh, we LOVE KFRC on this site… after all, your webmaster based his Amateur Vanity Callsign on it! Please, somebody do a TOH ID for K1FRC! Beau Weaver (KFRC, KNUS, KHJ) is W6KHJ…. I’m jealous HAHA.

Proof that radio rapidly cut staffs and costs after consolidation took hold is evident, not so much in this STATION, as the FORMAT. Alice is, apparently, jockless in this 6 1/2 minute scope of a 90 minute cassette side. KLLC is, in 1998, Modern AC (kind of a softer, Pop Alternative format) and rather quiet, with the exception of Alice imaging inserted every other song or so.

Good or not? You be the judge. This station is, after all, all about the music and not personalities, so perhaps listeners enjoyed it.

“East Coast Airchecks” was one of those ’90s professional aircheck services that sent out tapes to radio stations and other subscribers. We’ve featured plenty of these before, courtesy of Robyn Watts, who sent us lots of these tapes back in ‘04. Now, from one labelled “Classics II” comes this almost 5 minute listen to one George McFly on San Francisco’s X100. It’s high energy 80s formatics and a station that’s long gone which we think you’ll really like.

California Composite | September 1991

Digging deep into the Airchexx archives, we find this two sided cassette donated by longtime contributor Nick Sarames several years ago. While I called this “California Composite”, this does include many other markets, mainly west of the Mississippi. Most of these include one or two breaks, then move on to another station. There are so many (maybe a hundred or more), it’s difficult to list in order, so you’ll just have to listen. Maybe your favorite is represented here.

This covers most of the state of California, and some other markets like Denver, Las Vegas, Lansing, etc… and even Barstow, CA in the high desert. A very interesting collection to say the least. Enjoy!

Composite: KYA San Francisco | March 1965

Long dramatic jingles, disc jockeys who comment about everything with lots of talk between songs, outdated news sounders and reverb on demand all highlight this first San Francisco top 40 station. This is quite entertaining, however, because while the formatics shown here on KYA are loose, a reminder of the early 60s, the jocks are very talented and the format comes off very tight. Nobody skips a beat or misses a cue.

Its a history lesson for those who never heard what radio sounded like in 1965.

Thanks to visitor Paul Duca for reminding us that crosstown KFRC’s “Boss” sound was still a year away, and at the time of this recording, KYA was the only game in town. Your webmaster had a senior moment…

Bobby Mitchell, KYA San Francisco | December 15, 1961

Going way back to the early days of Top 40 radio, a young Bobby Mitchell is heard here on San Francisco’s earliest hit station. This is where Bill Drake (yep, THE Bill Drake who pioneered the Boss format) honed his skills. Strangely enough, Drake would cross over and consult crosstown 610 KFRC later that year and blow KYA out of the water!

Starts out with a full newscast, then Mitchell plays the hits for the Bay area.

Denny St. John, KOFY San Francisco | December 12, 1987

I know nothing about this station other than a search turns up that it was in San Francisco, and there is a KOFY Television station there today. This recording features a very good Denny St. John and a well produced oldies station gearing up for Christmas in December of ‘87.

Kim Diamond on KKWV San Francisco | 2004

Courtesy of Matt over at Big Apple Airchecks, we have a… well, mysterious aircheck of good quality. Kim Diamond starts out saying she got up in a strange kinda mood so its gonna be one of those kinda shows… she’s pretty talented, but we can dig up virtually NOTHING on KKWV “The Wave” as the only website that those call letters bring up is something on 88.1 in Aransas Pass, Texas in the Corpus Christi market. So, the station’s gone, replaced by… something.

This Infinity (now CBS) owned station had a good mix of music, pretty wide variety and some personality, but like so many stations that have come and gone, really had nothing special to offer, at least from our perspective. Nonetheless, its a good scope of a station that apparently no longer exists.

Blue in the Morning on 99.7 KYUU San Francisco | August 9, 1988

After the demise of KFRC two years earlier, CHR was left only to the FM band, and this station, KYUU. Here’s a long aircheck of Blue in the Morning, with all the essential elements of modern morning shows… news, traffic, weather, entertainment reports and the like. It’s mostly information for the first one third of this scope, then the hits really start rolling (we’re assuming in the 9am hour).

We know nothing about Mr. Blue other than this sounds like a pretty run of the mill morning show you’d hear in any other city in the late 80s…. we’ll give the programmer this: there ARE a few dead segues and some decent imaging, but other than that, no jingles and after the informational portion of the morning show, it’s pretty dead apart from the hits from 1988. Still, its one of the few rare non KFRC San Francisco airchecks, and we’re sure someone out there remembers this station.

Audio is a bit grainy, this is a second generation recording that someone encoded at a lower bitrate, but it’s pretty good beyond that.
