VidChexx: TV Commercial for WWLI 105.1 Providence | 1985

Here’s another great VidCheck sent in by Jeff Lehman – A commercial for “Lite 105″ shortly after this very soft AC station made its debut. Long time residents will remember this frequency as WPJB “Music Power” back in the 70s and early 80s. It really was a powerhouse Top 40 outlet back in the day but it’s been a soft AC for well over 20 years now.

VidChexx: WJMN Boston TV Spot | 1993

Thanks to contributor Jeff Lehman, we have this TV spot from then newly-hatched WJMN “Jammin’ 94-5″ – a hip hop / R&B station that grew out of what was a great CHR, WZOU.

VidChexx: WCLB 105.7 Framingham (Boston) TV spot, 1993

Here’s the first in a series contributed by Jeff Lehman. The history of 105.7 is rather storied, and WCLB was the station formerly known as WVBF (Fairbanks Communications). The station’s history is documented at the Boston Radio Archives.

Vidchexx: Rock 101 KLOL FM Houston TV Ad | 1986

In our continuing series featuring TV ad campaigns of radio stations, we present this from KLOL Houston. This is an ad for the morning show.

Vidchexx: Don’t Be A Lemming – TV Spot for WXRT Chicago

In an exhortation to think for yourself, WXRT – “Chicago’s Finest Rock” launched this brilliant, if not somewhat abstract TV spot. Note: if viewers don’t stay with this spot through the entire :30 seconds, how will they ever remember to listen to WXRT? Brilliant move, guys…

Vidchexx: Q102 Philly’s Rock Alternative

When people think of WIOQ in Philadelphia, the first thing that comes to mind is a beat. But go back to the 70′s and 80′s and Q102 was right there with WMMR as THE rock station in Philadelphia. However, competition from the WMMR powerhouse and a new import from New York, Howard Stern on 94.1 WYSP left Q102 as the odd station out. In this commercial, WIOQ promotes its new adult oriented rock format.

This format, too would be short lived. In late 1987, WIOQ would flip to Oldies as “Solid Gold 102″ a few hours after 98.1 WCAU-FM became “Oldies 98″ WOGL. The Oldies battle would last for a year-and-a-half before WIOQ was relaunched as a Rhythmic CHR (which would later evolve into a Mainstream direction where it remains to this day).

Vidchexx: 1980′s WZOU Commercial

We’re going to try out a new feature here on Airchexx. With the advent of video publishing sites like YouTube, a number of radio related video clips have made their way online. Every Wednesday we’ll spotlight a couple of these clips for some quick midweek fun.

First up we go back to Boston with a commercial for CHR 94.5 WZOU. Looks to be from about 1988ish.
