New contributor Paul sent in this short aircheck of a station that once had a big presence in the market (even if dwarfed by CKLW) in the late 70s. AM 560 WHND is playing Oldies in this QuickCheck from 1983, and the audio is still good, as AM was still 13khz wide at the time and AM receivers still sounded good!

Ron Lundy Passes – 1935-2010

New – Ron Lundy on WABC 07/29/70 – Courtesy BigAppleAirchecks. Listening to this certainly is a step back in time! Lots of commercials, Full Newscast and of course, Ron Lundy’s sweet southern drawl on a hot Summer day when Con Electric had to cut back on electricity to avoid an outage. It’s tough to listen to, however, as there are a lot of annoying chops in the audio. So, patience is the rule here… but we had to have one new Ron Lundy Aircheck! So, Enjoy!

New Music Showdown/Night Show on Kiss-FM Calgary | 1996

From our Annonymous Donations file (yes, we had a contributor who wished to remain annonymous), comes this excellent aircheck of Kiss-FM Calgary. Unfortunately, there are few identifying marks to tell us what the call letters were, even the deejay didn’t say his name (but he SOUNDS similar to a guy named Doug Alling who used to grace the Boston airwaves on the old HitRadio 103 WHTT). So, once again, we’ll rely on visitor’s comments to identify this clip that we suspect was recorded in 1996.

Its the night show, and they are doing the New Music Showdown… a battle of the bands kind of thing. Lots of phone calls, high energy and all the old commercials are left in for identification. See if this brings back some memories to our Canadian visitors!!

Steve from Cape Cod has the knack of having his recorder on at *just* the right time. Here’s an aircheck that reminds us that sometimes automation isn’t ALWAYS bad… given the right circumstances.

Steve writes:

(Here is an) outtake of WTIC news reader Paul Reynolds, from Christmas night, 1985. It starts with the jingle intro to the news, followed by about 20 seconds of silence(apparently Reynolds was passed out in the newsroom). Then, talk host John Birchard scrambles to his mike, vamps for time, then hands it over to Paul…who does his thing.
About 30 seconds into the newscast the engineer realizes what’s happening and yanks Reynolds off the air.

Sounding suspiciously like a McLendon station, this short-lived Top 40 outlet sat at 92.5 on the FM dial. Never to be a serious contender to the REAL McLendon FM at the time, KNUS 99, this station did sound pretty good. By today’s standards, it sounds awesome!

Notice the imaging and the voices. Pretty typical for Top 40 stations in the mid-70s, in fact, listen to the 92K “Great Get-Off” promo at 1:56. The same sound effect was used as part of the Top of Hour ID at WXLO, X-Rock 80 and some others. See how many other similarities you can find with this vs other Top 40 stations of the day…

This is a great comparison between two competing Top 40 stations. 1961 was so early in the top 40 game that WABC was just in its infancy with its then-new format. This recording doesn’t include ABC.

WINS, of course, went on to become the nation’s first All-News station. WMGM simply reverted to the previous call letters on 1050, WHN, and then became synonymous with Country Music in New York for the next decade.

Hy Lit, 104.5 WSNI Philadelphia | May 18, 1985

The late, legendary Hy Lit is featured in this Saturday night oldies show hosted by him. Notables: WSNI is an AC formatted station that does Oldies during weekends. Listen carefully to the (brief) glimpses of music and you’ll know instantly that Lit brought in RECORDS for this event… some scratches come through.!

Probably best known for his time at WIBG, Hy Lit passed away in 2007 after 3 decades in radio.

"The Number One Radio Show", XTRA 690 Tijuana Mexico, 12/29/84-1/1/85. Anyone remember this?

Doing a little research in the search engines, I’ve found absolutely nothing on a program I remember. Maybe someone out there can help.

Back in 1984, I was in San Diego in Radioman “A” School in the U.S. Navy. One of the stations I really liked was Top 40 formatted XTRA “The Mighty” 690, targeting San Diego from its mighty transmitter in Tijuana, Mexico. New Year’s Day was apparently format change day, and the entire weekend, they ditched the top 40 format and played this syndicated program called “The Number One Radio Show”. I can’t remember who narrated it… for some reason I think it was Robert W. Morgan, but this was New Year’s Day 1985 and as I recall the show went up to 1980. The bumber music used was the final 3 notes of “What Goes Up” from the Alan Parsons Project.

Does anyone remember this show and what stations it might have aired on? I find it interesting that I’ve never heard it played since, on any other radio station. Curiocity simply killed the cat on this one, I simply throw this out to our audience for discussion.

Who knows what became of this 1970’s FM competitor in the Windy City? Certainly, there’s plenty of personality on 95.5 FM (including ol’ Captain Whammo aka Jim Channel), but the jingles in use are probably the worst ever heard in contemporary radio. I suppose that would be unique enough to keep an audience, but one would think that MET had enough personality playing the hits to give WLS a run for its money. Not being from Chicago, I know next to nothing about WMET other than it existed and that Captain Whammo went on to become a preacher with his own ministry sometime after his MET days.

Come to think of it, the jingles and top 40 approach seems similar to the John Long sound at X-Rock 80 down in Juarez, Mexico… minus the cutsey Mexican female voice

This composite runs approximately 46 minutes scoped. Its in mono, but pretty clean sounding considering it’s now 31 years old as of this writing. 31 years! wow, was high school that long ago?

Larry Lujack on the Voice of Labor - WCFL Chicago | October, 1973

During perhaps what was the best era for the Voice of Labor, WCFL was flying high mornings with ol’ Uncle Lar and his sometimes snarky attitude! Scoped down to a nice long aircheck of this particular morning, our biggest and best contributor, Matt over at Big Apple Airchecks really sent in a gem!

Lujack would go back and forth between ‘CFL and ‘LS a couple of times in the 70s before finishing out the decade at the Big 89!

I’ve been out of the loop so to speak for the last 2 weeks so there haven’t been any updates since New Year’s weekend. To make up for that, we’ll have a bunch of new classic recordings to post in the next few days.
