The Andy Bologovski Collection

Andy grew up on Milford, Connecticut in the 60s and 70s. He writes:
“My interest in radio began early – as a 6 year old, I used to play records and talk-up tunes for the entertainment of my friends and family. When I was 10, I got my first little reel-to-reel and now I could record the stuff I loved listening to on the radio! The early 1970’s were a great time for the radio scene in southern Connecticut. Each city had several competing Top-40 AM stations and most of them were terrific! Connecticut was a kind of tryout area for air talent – if they were good enough, they eventually went on to stations in nearby New York.
One that stood out in particular was WAVZ in New Haven. After a format change in 1972, they became “The New Waves” and copied the fast-paced, hi-energy sound of KCBQ in San Diego (the so-called “Q” format). Soon, everybody my age had their transistor radios tuned to the Lucky 13! You could bike along the beach and hear the same tune coming out of dozens of radios! (In fact, that’s one of my favorite memories – the smell of Coppertone, the breezy salt air and listening to WAVZ on the beach!). Anyway, I started taping the station on a little Panasonic AMFM/Cassette deck and between 1973 and 1979 amassed a collection of about 90 hours of tape! It never would occur to me then that 30 years later, I would still be enjoying listening to this stuff (and turning my kids onto it, too).”
