Some things were just MEANT to be shared! If you’re a fan of Country music, this aircheck will warm your heart. From the middle of the last great period in Country music, where the stars of the 90s, like Travis Tritt & Alan Jackson were still hot, and the upcoming stars of the 2000s, such as the Dixie Chicks (who indeed sabotaged their own careers after 9/11), this showcases a radio station that has withstood the test of time, carrying on a tradition of Country music started by AM 600 WCAO decades earlier.

For quite a while, WPOC was owned and operated by Nationwide Communications, a division of the infamous Nationwide Insurance company. The station jingles reflected the insurance company’s commercial melody to ‘Nationwide is On Your Side”, but by 1998 the station had dropped jingles, and here in this aircheck from 1999, there are new jingles used infrequently, with a different melody.

A couple of interesting tidbits here. The recording starts with Linda Sharp as the jock, then Jerry Houston picks up about 7 minutes in. On a personal level, there is an ad for Cancun Cantina, of interest to your webmaster because I was one of the house jocks at Cancun Cantina in 1994-1995. In fact, I was one of the very first DJs to work on the then ‘new’ Deck with its tiki bars and party atmosphere. I looked it up, the place is still there, apparently in a group of SEVEN clubs now! Wow!

I hope you’ll enjoy this Country aircheck from the city that just LOVES its Orioles, Ravens AND its Country Music, on 93.1 WPOC!
