Beau Weaver on 93 KHJ Los Angeles | 1976
Posted by permission. This aircheck is one of only a few from a real Boss Jock. Beauregard Rodreguez Weaver is the clown behind the microphone on this aircheck already available on Weaver’s own website.
One listen to this is reason enough to wish for the good ol’ days of RKO General - undeniably the Clear Channel of their time. Our thanks to Beau Weaver (Amateur Radio W6KHJ) for personally providing this aircheck!
Interestingly enough, Beau is a featured jock on a low powered (LP) FM station, KHJA, Madras Oregon! If you enjoy “Boss Radio”, check out…

What else can you say, but yet another example of why KHJ is considered one of the best Top-40’s ever.
RKO the Clear Channel of its time? Only in the back office. RKO allowed creative people to evolve magical formats like this. Clear Channel analyzes markets then buys up all the existing talent that might satisfy it, then puts them into a homogenized format that anybody could pull off. Could you imagine ANYbody but Robert W. Morgan and The Real Don Steele pulling off the Drake format at the flagship station of RKO General?
93 KHJ had a sister TV Station KHJ-TV

Agreed, however, in terms of size, RKO was undoubtedly the largest owner of its time, with an ability to finance the best of the best. The statement that RKO was the Clear Channel of it’s time is made in reference to that.
