I’m gonna post this a bit differently. This was part of a longer, composite put together from several airchecks around the same time period. They now are separated and there will be longer and added material this time.
Bill James is one of our contributors. I recently had reason to go through and find much of his material to get it back online. Frankly, this is one of the ‘much’ better stations we’ve posted. ‘Bad’ Billy did the night show and, like John ‘Records truly is my middle name’ Landecker on WLS – Billy was loud and proud to do the night show.
This is a really fun aircheck to listen to. You’ll find that in 1978, the AM rockers tried so hard to keep the kids attention span. It WAS fun – but not to last since most of these AM Top 40 stations gave up within two years or so. Now, you can hear this valliant effort to maintain parity with FM – in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania…not all that far from NYC, right here.

The Lehigh Valley itself was very competitive, not to mention everyone in Philadelphia & NYC. 79WAEB, 1320 WKAP, 1470 WSAN, and 1230 WEEX were all top 40 players in the 70s. Today, 1230 and 1320 are both ESPN, 1470 is oldies, 790 WAEB is news/talk, and WAEB-FM B104 is the market’s only CHR.
