Composite: WSRR ‘98.1 The Cat’ Memphis | March 4, 2005

We seem to have hit the gold mine on this aircheck. As of this writing it’s our number one most streamed! Archived Material

Since posting, the Classic Hits format of “The Cat” is no more, replaced, first, by a stunt consisting of all album sides of Classic Rock bands - one of the more popular stunts I’ve seen. Then, the new format launched with very little fanfare. Maximum Rock 98.1 The Maxx was ‘officially’ born on the first Friday in April. Listener feedback continues to be mixed, but you’ll be happy to note that this post with it’s growing list of comments is now (in the words of one poster), the de-facto site for information on WSRR/WXMX Memphis.

How’d we do that?

Anyway, back to the audio feature. This aircheck is from the very last week of the Classic Hits format - featuring Kay Manley and Rich “Brother” Robin. Judging from the number of comments, this station was far more popular than station management thought! If you haven’t yet, listen. It’s good!

P.S. - Where are they now? Richbro is in San Diego (and I’m waiting to hear from him) - and Kay Manley? She just did her first show on WGKX “Kix 106″ - about six hours after your webmaster’s shift there on April 16th. She’s just got weekends for now, so you Memphians be sure to call in with encouragement for her, she’s an AC hound but can do anything.

Where is JL and Wendi? I like there morning show and want to continue to listen to them. Demise, a side step at best. Let me know where they are and I will tune that station in and 98.1 out.

  3. Fastoy on March 18th, 2005 8:10 am

Wow! That change freed up a button on MY radio!

  4. Lucy on March 18th, 2005 1:09 pm

What is the station management thinking?!?! They’re just playing noice there now. I miss the morning show. Please let us know where to find JL and Wendi !!

  5. Jason on March 18th, 2005 6:45 pm

    Holy crap!

I was listening to 98.1 when it was The Target / Arrow / Star / The Cat.

It is by far my favorite radio station in Memphis.

My wife and I used to stay up much later at night then we intended just because 98.1 was playing good music and we didn’t want to miss it.

I’ve taken telephone polls where they ask you what your favorite radio station is; I’ve always told them it’s 98.1.

What do you have to do to keep a decent radio station around here?

FM 100 used to be good, too. After their format change to be more appealing to younger folks, no so much.

And 95.7 went away from really real oldies to gospel. Not a lateral move, really.

Is it time to get a car with a multi-changer CD player in the trunk or integrated MP3 player just so I can hear decent music?

  6. Buddy Wilson on March 19th, 2005 2:35 pm

I absolutely love the music that is playing now, there is some music that I’ve heard lately that I have not heard in years. Good work–sorry for the crew that got axed.

  7. Sandy Scott on March 19th, 2005 10:54 pm

I would actually like to see the Cat become a true classic rock station that could blow 103 out of the water. I get sick of the same three Led Zep, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top or Van Halen songs. I would like to see a station that throws in some 80’s hard rock songs as well. The only thing decent on 103 these days is Dee Snider’s House of Hair. I would like to see a rock station that actually went back to a Friday Night all request evening. I would also like to hear a bigger variety of bands on the air like Uriah Heep, Canned Heat, Alice Cooper (who still puts out great albums to this day why is his new stuff never played), Ted Nugent (hearing the Doublie Live Gonzo CD on the air was way coooollll), Deep Purple (not just Smoke on the Water) and the list goes on.

  8. John Killmar on March 21st, 2005 9:25 am

Nothing but music and commercials at 98.1? No traffic or news. They are playing sets of 5 or so songs from specific artists. Anyone know what’s going on?

  9. Don Elder on March 21st, 2005 3:48 pm

Me 2. I loved JL and Wendi. I hope the new management has the good sense to higher them.

  10. Melissa on March 21st, 2005 8:24 pm

Love the changes. I wish they would play more Uriah Heep, Nugent, and Alice Cooper.

  11. DIANE COX on March 21st, 2005 8:51 pm

iI usually tune in 98.1 in tome mornig when I’m drive my Grand kids to school, even My 9 year old grand son like listening to the station. I think they mad a big mistake, I miss jl, wendy And” WENDYS World in the morning” My grandson even notice that the station isn’t right well we switched we are now listening to a local station, of oldies 102.3 here in Arkansas… Bye bye maybe we well here you again

  12. Andrea J. Brown on March 21st, 2005 9:00 pm

What ding dong decided to change the cat 98.1 to that crap yall are playing now??? What is that and how many people like that better than what it wast? I am sorry to be so rude but I really loved the classic rock and old songs. We dont have a station to hear that on anymore. I really think whats on there now is ……..well……horrible. I mean I recognize some of the artists but NONE of the songs. Get the popular 70’s and 80’s music back on PLEASE. Its terrible now and I will not be listening any longer. Whose bright idea was it to change it?
    GEEZZZZ

  13. Darren on March 23rd, 2005 9:11 am

Maiden all morning!!! this format rocks…!!!!!!!!!!!!! who needs DJs ? morning shows are for wussies….

  14. BIG ROB on March 23rd, 2005 10:41 am

I LOVE THE NEW FORMAT. BEEN WAITING ON THIS FOR YEARS. CAN’T WAIT FOR D&Z TO COME ON AIR. LOVE HEARING THE OLD SABBATH,MAIDEN,NUGENT, AND SRV. I KNOW SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT HAVE CHANGED OVER TO THIS NEW STATION. KEEP ROCKIN.

  15. ALAN on March 23rd, 2005 10:51 am

LOVE THE NEW FORMAT. SEVERAL OF MY FRIENDS HAVE MADE THE CHANGE TO 98.1. KEEP ON ROCKIN.

  16. Steve Parrott on March 23rd, 2005 12:24 pm

I think the new 98.1 is GREAT! It is no longer just another oldies station playing the same old thing over and over again. I love the more obscure album cuts and the artist spotlights. It often reminds me of the “underground” FM stations back in the 60s and 70s. I love hearing songs that have not been played over the air in years. There are plenty of stations playing the top 40 oldies if that is what you want to hear, I commend whoever had the guts to implement the current 98.1 format. For all of you that hate it… well… it will not last… NO commercial radio station stays with the same format forever. Those who love it, enjoy while it is here, and those who hate it, just wait until it changes again.

  17. R. Ellis May on March 23rd, 2005 12:28 pm

Well, it looks like the same idiot that made the decision a few years back to put on that “billy bob and bubba” show on the air has struck again. I was so disturbed by that move that I actually called in and complained. The guy I spoke to was unsympathetic and basically told me to give it a chance and I would just fall in love with it. Well, I didn’t and apparently no self respecting listeners in Memphis did either, because it got “canned” at the next contract renewal. This is really a shame that they have gone to this new format. There was nothing wrong with morning shows and now they have gone and tried to fix something that wasn’t broken. Well, they just lost another dedicated listener. Their loss, not mine.

If anyone wants to listen to this current junk, they ought to just call over a bunch of the ol’ homeboys, fire up the bong and just listen to their home stereo systems. Jeesh!!!!

  18. Melissa Barnes on March 23rd, 2005 4:45 pm

I love the fact that they aren’t playing the same tired old crap you hear on Clearchannel radio stations. That’s what is wrong with classic rock radio, the same band over and over again. If you are not familiar with deeper album cuts by a band then whose fault is that? I agree with Sandy and the other person who had somewhat similar post. Love to hear a lot more Alice Cooper. However, let me add some Dr.Hook and the Medicine Show to the equation. Is it true Zeke Logan is the new program director?

  19. The King on March 24th, 2005 11:52 am

Well, that would certainly explain the “DZ” currently displayed on the 981thecat website (Drake and Zeke?). However, I loathe the thought of these two managing another “classic” rock station–when is this market going to get some real talent and a format that appeals to higher than neanderthal/teenage level audience? Although now a loyal XM subscriber due to
dissatisfaction with the available commerical offerings and endless barrage of screaming, intelligence insulting advertisements, I did enjoy listening to J.L. and Wendy while getting ready in the morning–they were at least friendly, well spoken and inoffensive. I wish them well in their future pursuits as I’m sure there’s a better market for their talents. Too bad there’s no job security in this business for honest folk (witness Kramer on the “Buzz”; now replaced with an amateur straight from broadcasting school).

Let us hope that 98.1 becomes a true breath of fresh air with a diverse format that doesn’t repeat endlessly what we got tired of hearing 20 and 30 years ago. And please, please rise above the mediocrity of your competitors and award those older than 13 or with a higher than 8th grade education with some stimulating, non ego-tripping talent.

Wolfman, stay tuned…maybe the MEM market will stop you from turning over in your grave and bring some credibility back to radio…

    Sigh….

  20. WESMAN on March 24th, 2005 1:08 pm

No more Elton John over and over and over again! Finally, a good station. Drake And Zeke ROCK!!!!! Keep it up. For those of you that don’t like the new format, change the channel.

  21. JOY CRUCIANI on March 24th, 2005 2:00 pm

BEEN LISTENING TO 102.7 FOR FOREVER, BUT YOU HAVE HOOKED ME–KEEP DOIN WHAT YOU’RE DOIN, AND I WILL NEVER STRAY!

  22. Juddster on March 24th, 2005 4:54 pm

Drake & Zeke are coming…it’s about time, 98.1 could use a little personality - and a play list that won’t put me to sleep. However, I do feel sorry for the competition and for the soft rock fogey’s. I hope the powers that be provide streaming audio, I don’t live in the area anymore and am having a jones for some crude humor.

  23. mffire on March 24th, 2005 11:10 pm

Just as I thought 98.1 couldn’t get any better. . . Well, I could only dream of a change like this. So far, in a word, outstanding! Looking forward to April 1. 70’s +- 5 years album rock would be just great. How ‘ bout some Mott, Lou Reed, and Zappa!

  24. Barry O'Bryan on March 25th, 2005 10:47 am

How anyone can be happy listening to the same tired songs day in and day out ad naseum is beyond me. Music is about discovery, as well as entertainment.
Just because a song is a “hit” doesn’t mean that it is the best song on the entire CD. More than likely it was a corporate decision to force-feed the public those particular tunes.
This format is fantastic and refreshing in the current Clear Channel dominated environment. I actually turn off my XM and Sirius receivers now and again to listen to 98.1.
Don’t be brainwashed by corporate radio. Stop drinking the kool-aid!
    Long live WXMX!

  25. Donna on March 25th, 2005 10:06 pm

I am so excited that we have a station willing to give the people what we really want. Real music it is about time. When you make the change April 1st. Please keep this format. It is so wonderful to have the music that I and others grew-up with. Other stations in Memphis are afraid to ROCK. Thank you from the bottom of my heart PLEASE keep Rock alive….

  26. Paula on March 25th, 2005 11:01 pm

Hate it, hate it, hate it!! I changed several years ago from wrvr, when they got so lame. What the h**l am I supposed to listen to now??!!

  27. Matt Seinberg on March 26th, 2005 7:39 pm

I can’t get over classic rock with a southern accent…being from New York, where we don’t have accents…lol…
Besides, isn’t “The Cat” monicker usually used for country music stations? I like the sound and selection of music. Hope they stick around for awhile!

  28. Alana on March 28th, 2005 11:26 am

The new format, if that’s what it’s going to be, (playing pearl jam now) is BADASS!!! I certainly hope the DZ means Drake and Zeke. I love those guys and have been jonesin like a crackhead for some real humor since they left rock 103. Dennis & Rick are about as boring as a brick wall. I have not listened to 103 very much anymore because of the beuracracy going on down there, and found the cat had changed last week!!!! WOOHOO!!! Chalk one up to the man listening for a change.

  29. Debbie on March 28th, 2005 2:26 pm

I WANT MY C A T !!!! What in the world are you doing taking the best station west of New York and changing it again!! I’ve heard classic rock stations all over the country and 98CAT is the best… bar none!! Memphis needs a good classic rock station without the trash… which WEGR does NOT provide. The CAT rocked and was the favorite of many of my friends and myself !! It’s the only station I listened to… now I’m lost. I’m bringing out the CD’s again because I don’t want anything but the CAT format!! I miss JL & Mandy… I miss knowing that what ever you play, I will like!! This stinks! There are several folks where I work that are livid… please make us happy campers once again!!

  30. Tim Skorupa on March 28th, 2005 4:41 pm

I CAN ONLY HOPE THIS FORMAT STAYS THIS WAY. I AM A LOYAL XM LISTENER, BUT WHEN I’M AT WORK THIS STATION IS ALMOST AS GOOD. AS FAR A DRAKE AND ZEKE, WE CAN ONLY HOPE THEY ARE BETTER ON THIS STATION, THAN ON ROCK 103. GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!!!

  31. Bud Beer on March 28th, 2005 5:05 pm

I had nearly given up on Star98 because they played the same tired rotation. This new format is GREAT! Now 98 is the only station I hit, I don’t even use the CD player anymore because I don’t want to miss what my come up next. Keep it up!

  32. griz fan on March 29th, 2005 12:09 pm

Can’t wait to actually hear Zeke on the air again and eventually Drake also. Miss those guys alot. The new format kicks the CAT’S butt. Yes people there are other groups out there besides Zep and Elton John. Hopefully Z will keep playing deep cuts from albums and won’t get lost in 70’s only music.

  33. Lynn on March 30th, 2005 12:29 am

Having been a 70’s hippie, I considered myself quite “rock music savvy.” I’m amazed when I tune into 98.1 and don’t have a clue who the artist is. While I love obscure and ordinarily unknown cuts from the late 60’s, 70’s, and early 80’s, I realize there is a lot of music out there that I’ve never heard… and don’t particularly like. I think 98.1 could go with the “Cat” format and expand the library, give some more varity, and satisfy those of us who still enjoy truly great rock!!!! I miss you J.L and Wendi!!!! You’ll always be the “Breakfast Bunch” to me! Lynn p.s. I’d rather not have to endure Drake and Zeke’s crude, rude, and nasty trash. Can you clean them up??????

  34. Shannon on March 30th, 2005 2:02 pm

All Priest!! All the time!!! Yes!!! If the format remains remotely similiar to what has been playing the last week or so I will never change stations again!!

  35. Mary on March 30th, 2005 2:12 pm

I like the music, but miss J.L and Wendi. I also miss my traffic reports. I switched to 98.1 to escape the crudeness and rudeness and self-rightiousness of the 102.7 main “talents”. (especially that morning trio). I don’t mind D & Z, but I do hope that they clean up their act a bit.

  36. Geosnooker on March 30th, 2005 6:26 pm

I fear this is just a “tide-me-over” ’til they introduce NASCAR radio or some obnoxious crap like that. Anything other that exactly what they’re doing now would truly be an awful April fools joke. And, oh yeah, stop name-dropping NYC, y’all. Talk about obnoxious.
Anyway, playing whole albums is the most awsome thing I’ve heared on the radio in years. But I know not to get my hopes up that it will continue. Thin Lizzy’s cowboy song is one I’ll be listening for!
    geosnooker

  37. Angel of Retribution on March 30th, 2005 10:06 pm

Wahoooo!! Look out Prudence, here comes some ROCK! Memphis has never had a station with the gumption to play some of the songs I’ve been hearing and it’s been 25 years coming. I’ve been changing the channel long enough, now it’s somebody else’s turn. A little Finntroll would make these girly-men run back to their mommas. How about some of the new Priest or maybe Within Temptation? The OZZman Cometh! Bwah hah ha!

  38. KW on March 31st, 2005 10:23 am

Not much of a radio listener these days, but could not believe when I heard the entire Bob Dylans Greatest Hits Vol. 1 Wednesday Night on your station. Much to my surprise, the next morning,I hear a Live B.B. King side and Dylan again with Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. What the heck is going on???????? Usually you do not hear great artist like this on local radio much less whole album sides from them. If you keep this up…I will be giving my CD player a break. Good things like this normally do not last long in Memphis……….here’s hoping!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Brenda on April 1st, 2005 7:23 am

I don’t know what brain blank the new management had to change the station, but you really blew it! I also have changed my listening to another station. Have been with Wendy and J.L. since the beginning. Please let us know where we can find them again. I have one true comment for the stupid decision making PTB “HEY STUPID, IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!!!!!!!” Anyone left listening to this station now can have it. I have gone elsewhere…………and by the looks of it, so have most of the listening audience! Bye!

  40. Geosnooker on April 1st, 2005 9:27 am

Y’all this morning elsucko! Get to the music cut out the April fools joke.

  41. Nick on April 1st, 2005 10:13 am

YESTERDAY ROCKED!!!! Iron Maiden, Cinderella, Judas Priest — I was having high school flashbacks!! But what the (*#$& happened at 9:00 o’clock?? What in the world are you guys thinking??? Vanilla Ice followed by Smokey and the Bandit’s theme song??? I’ve had a more congruous chunks in my vomit!

  42. FORMER LISTNER on April 1st, 2005 10:14 am

WELL I GUESS IF WE CAN LET PEOPLE DIE JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN’T SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES I SUPPOSE I SHOULDN’T BE TOO SURPRISED THAT NOW A RADIO STATION HAS SUFFERED THE SAME FATE!!!!!!!!!!!!! SEEMS NO ONE WANTS TO APPEL TO THE “BABY BOOMERS” ANY MORE MAYBE WE SHOULD STOP SUPPORTING ANY SPONSERS YOU HAVE TOO. IF YOU’RE NOT GOING TO PLAY “OUR” MUSIC” AT LEAST TELL US WHERE TO TUNE TO

  43. Stuart Thomas on April 1st, 2005 11:28 am

what is going on? they wer eplaying albums, cuts, etc. and now the big change comes and they are palying RAP garbage. Anyone know what’s up with this crap?

  44. JOAN on April 1st, 2005 8:30 pm

I will be switching xm satellite . I can’t find decent oldies anywhere on the dial any more. whats this world coming to. I used to laugh my ass off listening to jl and wendy in the morning. BYE BYE 98.1 the crap.

  45. Angela Bass on April 2nd, 2005 7:59 am

Thought I had lost it when I turned on my favorite station - such crap! When I couldn’t get on the website, knew something was up. Well, you blew it again and ditto to the former negative comments. Now we have two Rock 103’s - just what we need. Loyal oldies fans, if you still want great oldies and can get it, 103.1 from Jackson is great. Lost another listener….

  46. donnieo on April 2nd, 2005 12:04 pm

It’s about time for D&Z to get back on our airwaves. I am having D&Z withdrawals so the quicker ya’ll get back the better. In the meantime I am enjoying the good tunes. Hell, if ya’ll do come back to 98.1 with Marky B I would probably let my mom blow ya!

  47. Donna on April 3rd, 2005 8:50 am

OK what happened to ROCK we were teased with, these past weeks. The new 98.1 sounds like Rock 103. The same songs that I hear on 103. My friends and I were so loving the album rock. hearing songs you don’t normally hear on the radio. I am disappointed in the Tease of 98.1. Where is the ROCK?? Where is the Judas Priest, Ozzy,Uncle Ted, Dio. Love to hear some Iron Maiden. I Like I said It sounds just like Rock 103. And what really got me was the Nirvana, what is up with that. PLEASE give us ROCK…..

  48. Kristin on April 4th, 2005 12:11 pm

I really like the new format. ALOT. I am a big fan of all the music that is being played so far. Any idea how long it’s been since I heard Skid Row? That was great! The only thing I am wary of is the arrival of Drake and Zeke. If they have the same type show they had on the other station, I will stop listening. I am tired of hearing about trashy, innapropriate things on the radio, the other station goes over the top way too much. I hope this new format sticks to good music and a regular dj format, leaving out all the sexual references and innuendo that seems so prevalent on the radio today. Not everyone that likes this type of music, likes the trash that usually comes along with it from the DJs.
    Thanks

  49. Juddster on April 4th, 2005 4:28 pm

To FORMER LISTENER: Get off your little political soapbox…the whole time I was reading your post - I saw words, but all I could hear was “Whaaaaaaaaaaaa”. And what the hell does Schiavo have to do with Memphis radio anyway? The format changed because it obviously wasn’t working.

  50. Traci Cecil on April 5th, 2005 6:41 pm

I love the new format. I hope the variety stays. I miss JL and Wendi. However, if Drake and Zeke come on board, I am bailing! Those guys are nasty!!!! Just play some music in the morning…there is talk all over the band int the morning. There is nothing like a good Scorpion or Queen or Motley Crue song to wake you up on the way into work. Don’t mess it up with stupid, vulgar men like Drake and Zeke.

  51. Jeff Perkins on April 5th, 2005 10:15 pm

I’ve had XM radio since it started and there is not a single channel on there that compares to this new format!! This music definately fills the void we have on the commercial airwaves now. Truth is 103 is not what it used to be anymore and now plays the same tired rotation and will lose most of their listeners to this station. Some people complain about D & Z’s show but compared to the crap- rap they let their kids listen to it’s tame. As far as I’m concerned they are and always will be the best team on air whether it be satellite or public radio. Despite what a few say there is a considerable audience for a station like this in Memphis and if given a chance will become hugely popular. Rock-on peeps and I’ll be listening everyday now !! Thanks Max, A new loyal listener

  52. Kristin on April 6th, 2005 10:09 am

Still love the music, but was EXTREMELY put off by the stupid fart story that afternoon dj told on Tuesday. Do you guys think we are all a bunch of 12 yr olds? I would expect that most of the listeners that remember and enjoy this kind of music, are a little old for bodily function references on the radio, and if that IS what the fan base of this radio station finds funny, I will be removing myself from that list. Use some discretion and get some class. Just play the music.

  53. Runnin' man Dave on April 6th, 2005 10:59 am

98.1 The Cat had some good stuff with classic rock, but they really abused “the hits” by way overplaying what they thought people wanted to hear 20 times a day (like Fleetwood Mac). I agree with what some earlier said about playing other album cuts from a popular album, songs you usually never heard on the radio. When you think about from the late 60’s to the early 80’s, you’ve got about 14 years worth of material. Surely 98.1 can use all of that to appeal to those that like that music era.

  54. Jon on April 6th, 2005 10:35 pm

Forget the morning show. The FM dial has no shortage of ‘topics of the day’, ’special guests in the studio’, puerile sophomoric humor, etc.

    Blech.

When I am in the car I want to hear music.

C’mon people! Where else are you going to hear Twisted Sister and CCR back to back?

Mark my words, alter the format you have now and I can’t be held responsible for my actions. I just may go on a 3-state killing spree armed with a spork or something.

To the local law authorities, yes I am joking. I may keep it down to 2 states. But - I will ramp it up to 4 if they go country.

  55. Johnny Maniscalco on April 7th, 2005 11:04 am

I’ve listened to Rock 103 mostly because of Drake and Zeke, but it was tough to listen to the same 2 or 3 songs from bands that have 8 to 20+ album careers. When I heard the old 70’s FM format of playing whole album sides, I almost cried! Thanks to the station programmer that understands FM Rock radio and it’s listeners. Do consider adding traffic reports (this is Memphis). As a rocker at 47 yrs. old, it is a pleasure to hear this change take place. What took so long? You are killing every Classic Rock radio station with this format and my wife Angie and I, along with the rest of the true Rock world, love it! Again, THANKS!, THANKS!, THANKS!

  56. Kendoll on April 11th, 2005 12:02 pm

I do not like the new station at all. I miss the classic rock that I could listen to ALL day!!! JL and Wendy were great in the mornings and I loved walking at night to the music. Now I have taken the station off in my car, at work and my head set that I walk with! I miss the good music, we already have ROCK 103… bring back 98.1 the CAT!!!!!!!

  57. Ken on April 11th, 2005 4:32 pm

Don’t know what the deal is yet.. have been on 103 for a while.. but they have been put on too short a rope… boring to hear them now.. If 98.1 gets D&Z and let me do there thing with no hold backs, other morning shows will soon be a memory…

  58. Kyle Tims on April 12th, 2005 1:35 pm

Now this is what I’ve been waiting for for a long time.I’am in my thirties and grew up listening to this kind of music, Rock On!!!!!. And as far as Drake and Zeke go, These guy’s belong here. I had listened to them for years, and when they left 103 I did too!! Keep it up, and those people who say they can’t stand Drake and Zeke, they can listen to 103!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far, I think the change is for the better. I had developed a short attention span for the old format. Usually I would tune in for a few seconds and say to myself “I really don’t need to hear that tired old song again”. I like the idea of playing entire cd’s, (not all the time), but doing that on Saturday’s is a cool idea. This has the potential of being the only real Rock station in the area. The other guys have a limited rotation and I have a short attention span for them too. There is a lot of really great music that never gets played on radio stations, real music lovers want to hear something they haven’t heard a million times. Please don’t get sucked down into the same trap that most radio stations do and keep up the good work.

    Steve,

Do a google search for “98.1 The Cat”. Look at what comes up and you’ll see why Airchexx.com has become the defacto site for people wondering what happened.

Rockers, Hello!!!!! You guys are really rockin’!!! I was there on that friday that it all started. I heard Guns N’ Roses: Welcome To The Jungle on that Friday and I have been listen every day since then. No, Really!!!!!! This is the radio station that I have been waiting on!!!!! Please Play more Guns n’ roses, Older Aerosmith (Not Dream On) Train kept Rollin’, Mama Kin, and Van Halen. 98.1 The Rock is the best thing to happen to memphis radio in along time. Thanks!! Play more Guns N’ Roses. Dylan M.

Finally, you gave Memphis what we needed! Love the music and programing. Have been having withdraw from Drake and Zeke and hope they will both be back on the Memphis airways really soon. This is MY new radio station. My “scan” button is about broken anyway. Love to hear some more “old time rock n’ roll”. Love everything about the station!!!!!

Hey, it’s Zack Bennett here. I was the overnight guy on 98.1 The Cat for about the last 6 months of the format.. though I’ve only been to Memphis twice in my life. I was pre-recording those shifts from Nashville about 3 days in advance. Man, I had fun doing that. I’m glad you all liked the station. Rich Brother Robbin is a true pro. I worked for him here in Nashville and he is a class act and I dearly miss working for such a great guy.

Memphis, enjoy The Max…I hear it really sucks, and rightfully so. Because Citadel got rid of the true pros from 98.1 The Cat, they deserve to flounder with the new format.

I personally am still loving the new format. It is the only semidecent station in Memphis. My only question is how long does it take to actually hire more than just a couple of deejays. The music needs even more variety. Anyone who thinks a classic rock station needs to play more GnR needs to get a life.
