Composite – Boston FM Dial | 1983 (14:55) Scoped

We have a composite of the Boston FM dial from 1975 elsewhere on this site. Now compare that with this look at Boston’s FM stations in 1983. At one point that year, there were three CHR’s jockying for position: WXKS-FM Kiss 108, WHTT HitRadio 103 and for a time, 98.5 WROR. WCOZ would flip to CHR as WZOU in early ‘84, so they didn’t quite count at this point.

We mentioned in the WROR/WBMX format flip that WROR had gone CHR… well, this composite shows what it sounded like. It only lasted a few months before WROR went back to AC… but IMHO, it was the best sounding CHR in the market– while it lasted!

The best spot you never say ROR FM we’re taking over. Filmed but never aired.
    Mike Waite never sounded better.
The beach party at the Palace turned into drunken some what embarrasing event.

God I miss live radio. It was so much fun listening to your favorite DJ’s (Dale Dorman, Ed McMann, Jo Jo Kincaid, Doug Allign, Loren & Wally etc.) and enjoying the talent that these people had. Now it is all voice tracked (which for those of you who don’t know what this means is that the show taped and the DJ isn’t live) which makes it so automatic.

Now everything is pushed to the website…even the weather. OK, so what if you are driving in your car? Who can you go to a website if there isn’t a computer near you?

I hope that someday live DJ’s come back.

The late Tyler is on the aircheck. Ty died a couple of years ago in Florida.

The station I miss is Newsradio 590/ WEEI… It appears to be really difficult to find airchecks from WEEI.. in stark contrast to the mothership in New York which survives.. WCBS. WEEI sounded much more polished then compared to WBZ now… and I miss the CBS News on the Hour.

But, the sounders live on… I work at WSTJ in St Johnsbury, VT and at a minute before noon every weekday you hear the headline sounder and just before the top of the hour… 4 tones before network news.

    Have a good one.

So, after all these years, I’m sitting at home last week watching Family Guy on TV with my wife and WHTT comes on their radio! I guess Seth must have been listening. I just found this site and would like to say thanks for keeping the memories alive! Doug Allng
