The Tony Impieri Collection: ID Fever 1987 (44:56)

sWKNR4_13.jpg

I’ve changed the name of this particular exhibit – ID Fever is the name that displays in my car CD when I load it. How appropriate!

Part one features mainly stations out west. It starts in Washington state and moves South and East. Part two picks up in Texas. Between the two parts, this hits nearly every market in the U.S., ending in Boston – where clearly the source tape ended before moving into Northern New England. Another point, while we nail the date as 1987 (As Tony describes below), I’ve found a few timeline inconsistencies. For instance, when this composite rolls into Chicago, there’s an ID for WYTZ Z95, then two IDs later, an ID for WLS-FM Z95. Hmmm… very interesting. Note on this exhibit how many similar JAM jingle packages these stations use. They are my personal favorite of all jingle packages in the 70s or 80s.

Tony describes this particular collection of airchecks:

“The origination of this is unknown. It appears to have been recorded in 1987. It was given to me by Bill James (one of your contributors) back in 1989. I checked with Bill the other day. He said he got it from David Neel who used to do overnights back then for us at WSUL. Dave went on to work in Brownwood, TX and Tallahassee FL as Dave Tyler.

I don’t know where Dave acquired it from. This composit has been my favorite all these years as I classify myself as a ‘jingle freak’.

There ya go. Thus describes the sometimes strange twists and turns that these aircheck collections take before they arive at Airchexx Central. Thanks to one and all for sharing!

This is a good aircheck. I listened to both volumes and they sound very great. I enjoy hearing legal IDs from the 1980s through today.

  2. This is actually a compilation entitled “The United States Of Radio.” It was put together by Phlash Phelps (now of XM Radio) in the mid-late 80’s. I think he was at 100KHI in Ocean City MD at the time. Some stations on here were from previously released skim-tapes, but much of this Phlash actually drove around the US to record himself! I got my first copy in 1989, and still listen from time to time. To any production geeks, it’s clear that JAM’s Hot KIIS wins for top hour jingles, and it may be a dead tie with Mitch Craig and John Young for sweeper voice. Enjoy!!!

Nice collection of airchecks! I wanted to clear up one station you might be confused on. It’s in regards to Z95 WYTZ-FM Chicago. When you recorded that station in 1987 it was going through a transition phase from the old WLS-FM 95 to the new Z95 and in order to not loose listeners, Z95 would refer to themselves as WLS-FM Z95 WYTZ. I know how confusing right? It was still owned by WLS-TV (ABC), AM, and FM, but they (Z95) were trying to become like everyone else with 4 call letters. There is no gap in the timeline, it probably was all recorded at the same time, that is just how that station was. I used to listen to it all the time as I have lived in Chicago my whole life.

  4. This is my entire collection of ID’s I aircheck during my many jobs. Most of this is actually 1985-1987. Chicago stuphph is phrom Phebruary 4, 1986. You can ask me about any of the ID’s on this tape and I can tell you exactly what day I recorded them. I put this together in the summer of 1987 phor Z103/Tallahassee. Brian Douglas wanted to hear some of my airchecks. I had the tape start with Spokane and then move across the country. It actually ends in Maine…someone’s tape must’ve run out in Boston. Since then I have 9 diphpherent tapes like this until all radio ID’s became the same and stopped airchecking. Too bad PHM radio isn’t still like this today or I may still be in PHM. Glad XM is bringing it back at least with my channel. Phlash Phelps XM Satellite Radio

  5. Does anybody know the name of the jingle package used on 94.5 KKOR down in Gallup, NM? I think it was between 31:30-34:00 of the aircheck. They still use that jingle package to this day on WGSY-Columbus, GA “Sunny 100.”

  6. It was actually around 31:00 of the aircheck, leading into Luther Vandross’ “Stop to Love.”

  7. Robyn Watts says:

    Richard,

I think it is JAM’s KDWB package.

  8. Derrick says:

Hey! I also love the WOKI-FM top of the hour ID a few minutes into part 2. It’s really nice.

  9. One more question…what about the jingle package used around 3:09 for KHIT Bremerton/Seattle into Glenn Frey?

  10. Robyn Watts says:

    Richard,

Both KHIT cuts were JAM’s “Nonstop Power” (done for WPLJ/NY). Interestingly enough, JAM had demoed “Nonstop Power” for KHIT at one point, showing how it could sound with a different vocal group as opposed to the group that WPLJ used on its version.

    Robyn

  11. Richard-

To answer your jingle questions, the KKOR jingle is from “On The Coast” from JAM. It was a custom for KOST 103/LA in 1985. The KHIT cut is from “Nonstop Power” from JAM. That was for WPLJ/NY in 1987. This aircheck is truly a testament to the power and spread of JAM jingles through the 80’s!
