The Tony Impieri Collection: Road Trip ‘89, Part 1 | February 1989 (47:48) Scoped
From contributor Tony Impieri comes this incredible montage of east coast radio stations! Tony worked as the on-air production director of WSUL-FM Monticello NY from 1985-1995. He also worked at WFAS-FM in White Plains NY. He’s currently doing freelance voiceovers and copywriting - if you’re interested in contacting Tony for some audio work, email us.
Recorded over 19 years ago, here’s a great representation of East Coast FM at the end of the 80s.
Tony writes:
“Back in February of 1989 I took a road trip from New York to Florida. My only companion was a small boom box which rode shotgun all the way. I recorded everything my radio could pick up along the way.
I filled up about 30 90 minute cassettes. When I got back to the studio and in my spare time I edited and scoped about 10 of the tapes. This was no easy task as I had been scanning the dial all along as I drove. I had to edit all of the breaks in a non linear fashion using linear means (an Otari deck).
Anyway… the result is a somewhat comprehensive representation of the FM dial from the Hagerstown MD/Chambersburg PA, Knoxville TN, and Atlanta/Macon GA areas and in between from late afternoon Sunday 2/12 through Monday 2/13, 1989.
Between this aircheck and it’s follow up (to post at a later date), you’ll hear these fine stations:
Z95, WARX, Q107, WFQX, K92, WYYD, Q99, WQUT, WTFM, KQ95, WIMZ, 99.9 KISS-FM, WIKQ, WOKI I100, KISS-FM 93, MAGIC 94, WEZK Easy 97, WIVK, KZ106, U102, WALV, TC105, WDOD, WDEF, Lite Mix 105, US 101, WQMT, WSKZ, Fox 97, WKHK, Power 99, 94Q, B98.5, Z93, Y106, 96 Rock, V103, WAYS, WFYM, WDEZ, WDEN, Magic 101, WMKS, WPPR, WCEH, WQBZ, WFAV, WSGY, WAAC, WJYF, Z97, WMTM, WQPW
Whew! What a list!

This is one of the best airchecks I have ever heard.
I especially like the Knoxville radio clips from 1989.
I have been waiting to hear a WIKQ (KQ95) sweeper and jingle.
I heard WIKQ back when I was young in the 1990s.
This is a good aircheck and I love it.
pretty cool aircheck. got lots of memories of woki and wimz back in the day…
Great composite. Hopefully we will hear Part 2 very soom as I want to hear my beloved Power 99/Atlanta again.

One more thing, the 99.9 Kiss FM that is on the composite is WKSF from Asheville, NC. The station by this time was rather boring and a far cry from the 1984-1987 era when they were very hot.

i can’t wait for part 2!!!!
Man, I wish I could get this to play for me, but for some reason it won’t! I would love to hear these stations…especially the Chattanooga and surrounding area stations seeing as how that is my hometown and now the market I work in on the radio! I’m going to try again on a different computer…
still looking forward to part#2 I really want to WPPR. I worked there that summer and would love the flashback!! Any chance of you sending me that aircheck?! Thanks!
I haven’t looked at this aircheck since posting it a few years go. I have the master tape and originally, I did post part 2, but that was way back when we were still on the old radio-info server back in the old days. That I forgot to get part 2 online is regrettable. I’ll dig up the tape and get that posted very soon.
Thanks for the reminder.
