KFWB 98 Los Angeles – Elliot Field – January 9 1959

From 1925 to 1950, KFWB was owned by Warner Brothers. (In the open of the video, I mention they also owned KDWB & KEWB. I later learned that was incorrect) By 1956, KFWB was purchased by Crowell-Collier Broadcasting, and two years later in 1958, KFWB became L.A.โ€™s first full-time Top 40 rock and roll station!

Over the years some legendary names graced the KFWB microphones. Gary Owens, Wink Martindale, Jim Hawthorne, Sam Riddle, Gene Weed, Jimmy Oโ€™Neill, Roger Christian, Larry McCormick and at the end of its music years, the team of Al Lohman and Roger Barkley.

In 1966, Group W Westinghouse Broadcasting bought KFWB, and on March 11, 1968, the station dropped the Top-40 music format and changed the its programming to all-news. it had a lot of success with that format at some other stations in the Group W Chain, Like 1010 WINS New York, & KYW Newsradio 1060 in Philadelphia.

This aircheck features KFWBโ€™s Elliot Field. He spent most of his time at KFWB hosting afternoon drive, as part of the KFWB 7 Swinging Gentelman. He even spent time doing cartoon voice work while on air at KFWB. His published book, โ€œLast of the Seven Swinginโ€™ Gentlemen,โ€ talks about his days at KFWB, and about his broadcast career. Elliot also spent time on air at KLIF in Dallas, KTSA in San Antonio, KILT in Houston.. -Ellis
