From the enormous Robyn Watts collection, we present J.J Walker on Y-100! This is included on a tape put out by a then-popular aircheck service called East Coast Airchecks. This is from tape #11.

A pretty funny and exciting late-80s CHR, Y-100 had a great lineup in those days. Walker does a feature called “Bed Check”, where callers throw in their comments and Walker just has a good time with it. Not much in the way of formatics or music, what scoped things we’d allow anyway. But one gets a feel for the J.J. Walker show presented here in a restored recording, lightly processed and noise reduced as the source tape was a bit worn.

  1. For those of you who don’t know who this really is…it’s Spyder Harrison, formerly of Z100 (The Jammer), many other stations and currently on SiriusXM.

    • Matt hit it on the nail! This was recorded shortly before JJ Walker left Y100 for KDWB/Minneapolis-St Paul in 1990, where he first used the airname “Spyder Harrison”. I did subment to Steve another aircheck of JJ Walker when he first arrived at Y100 in 1988 which may be featured sometime in the future.

      • I guess given all the attention this is getting lately, it’s time to dig that other one out. Robyn, I’ll be pulling from your material for years to come!

        • Hi Steve,

No rush from me as I know there are plenty of contributors that have collections that you probably haven’t mined yet. I’m just thankful that you have taken the time to put these airchecks on the net for others to enjoy.

If I don’t have a chance to say so, I hope that you and the people that happen to read this have a nice Thanksgiving.

          Best,
          Robyn

I once stopped by Y-100 in Ft. Lauderdale, was surprised to find the smallest on air studio I’ve ever seen. But what a great station and great sound. Remember Bhwanna Johnny!

Robyn, can you please email this aircheck to me in mp3 format?

    • Hi Mark,

I don’t have it anymore. Steve West is the only one that has the cassette that it was on.

Just use a program that records sound from your sound card, or a program that grabs the file being streamed to your computer.. I use Audio Record Wizard..

The last gasp of a faded glory. By this time Latinos were glued to Power 96, the white kids were listening to WSHE, and Soul Starforce 99 was readying a power increase as Hot 105 moved more Adult. This is a bad example of Y-100 but right before Steve Perun’s influence would take it more adult by summer 1990. Spyder Harrison sounds awful and needs an air check session.
