Jason Garrett on 107.5 KHYT Tucson | 1996

107.5 Tucson, KHYT K-Hit

Description by Contributor Jason Garrett…

From 1994-1996, the parody show, “70’s Saturday Night with Jason Garrett; Live on the Polyester Radio Network” enjoyed strong ratings success on KVRY-Variety 104.7/Phoenix. In 1996, the station flipped formats back to its heritage KZZP calls. But it was not Garrett’s last dance in the 70s format. In June 1996, Garrett was hired for the midday shift at Slone Broadcasting’s (pre-Citadel) K-HIT 107.5/Tucson. The station (KHYT-FM) was new to the market with a mix of all 70s Hits from Donna Summer to 10CC. As heard in this scoped aircheck, Garrett’s presentation is mellow when compared to his CHR/Hip Hop days as “Kid Corona” on Jammin’ Z-90, KOY, and KKFR; but his conversational style became a “listen at work” ratings winner in the Tucson metro. Jamie Slone was GM. Charlie Birdsell was PD. Garrett was also the station’s creative director until 1998 when he was lured back to Phoenix as production director for the new Party Station 103.9/KPTY-FM.

This is another post from the early days of this website. Restored and Re-Issued.  Jason Garrett is a great air talent and a Contributor to the Airchexx Archives.

Just out of curiosity, how long did the all 70s format last on this station? I remember 1995 and 1996 as being the years when lots of stations flipped to an all 70s format. In most cases, the format bombed and was abandoned within a year. I remember when WMGK in Philadelphia tried this format. I listened to it almost non stop for a couple weeks, but then the novelty wore off, as I’m sure it did with most people. I don’t know what these stations could have done to make this format successful over a prolonged period of time.
