Many forget that WRQX Washington began it’s life NOT as Top 40 Q107, but as Rock formatted WRQX 107. The ABC FM outlet was similar to it’s New York City sister station, WPLJ, as it played Washington’s Best Rock. In 1977, ABC Radio acquired WMAL AM & FM for $16 million. ABC changed the calls to WRQX, & tweaked it’s Rock format. ABC management only kept the Rock on WRQX for about a year & a half, when on April 15, 1979, WRQX changed to Top 40, and branded it as “Q107.” Top 40 on 107.3 lasted 11 years until August 31, 1990, when at noon, the station changed to Hot AC “Mix 107.3.” This aircheck is from the final few weeks of the Rock format in 1979, just before the Top 40 flip. It features WRQX jock, Joe Cipriano.
