QuickCheck: Ross & Wilson on WZGC Z-93 Atlanta | 1979

Here’s an aircheck I’d forgotten about - and apparently never linked back to the archives after it’s initial posting.

Ross & Wilson went to New York after this gig and held down mornings on WABC and later Z100. In fact, they were the last ones to do mornings during the music era of WABC, and stayed for a time into the News Talk era. Anyway, that’s what they did in New York.

On this all-too-short aircheck, Ross Brittain is solo - Wilson is out for some reason. Sure wish we had more of this station. By the way, this is our first bona-fide Atlanta area aircheck.

  1. World Famous Steve Taylor on March 30th, 2006 4:22 pm

Wow! I remember that morning! In this little snippet you hear Ross mention “former allnight acid rocker” Steve Taylor will be here filling in for Randy Reeves at 10 am. It was I believe January 1979. Not only was I a DJ at Z-93, I also double as the “coach” of the Z-93 Zippers.

Atlanta had received one of it’s heaviest snowfalls in recent history. I being originally from Michigan, was quite adept at driving in the snow, but the rest of the staff couldn’t make it in! I did my regular night shift from 9pm to 1am. Went to the Sheraton across the street and bunked out with roommate Mel Cargyle. That was a real adventure. The city of Atlanta was snowbound, and only had 4 snow trucks to dig the whole city out! What a nightmare!
All of the restraunts in the area were closed, including the varsity, so Mel and I were forced to get room service! Cheap ass management at Z-93 tried to get me to pay for our food! I told them to screw off!
They eventually saw it my way.

Thanks for the memories. Oh, by the way.. I have a dozen or so old airchecks from Z-93. The one you were listening to certainly came out of the aircheck machine… a cheap little panasonic mono cassette recorder. BTW this came from their studio on the corner of North and West Peachtree in the C&S Bank Building.
