Charlie Van Dyke on 68 WRKO Boston | March 5, 1979 (48:45) Scoped
This was a very recent addition to the archives back in the Summer of 2004. Charlie Van Dyke was perhaps, the best morning personality on WRKO during their tenure as a Top 40 station. CVD was hired as both morning man and PD in 1979, after relinquishing mornings on 93 KHJ in Los Angeles to former morning guy Charlie Tuna only a week before this aircheck.
This is Van Dyke’s very first day in Boston
In 1980, Van Dyke took WRKO away from Top 40 and into a year long experiment with Adult Contemporary music before throwing in the towell and moving to talk. But at the time of this aircheck, both WRKO and Van Dyke were hotter than a firecracker!

Van Dyke rocks…Great to hear him still voicingf promos for WDTN-TV in Dayton and doing liners for the much too breif “Real Oldies” WSAI,Cincinnati and WCOL-AM,Columbus…he has inspired me to do similar liners for WULM,an oldies station in Springfield,OH. Thanks for the inspiration Charlie. I remember your days on CKLW and WLS when I was a teen listeing to top 40.
i love it
I thoroughly enjoyed the charlie van dyke airchec k. very entertaining. The chatter between newsman Ed Walsh and Charlie reminds me of the pairing of fred winston and lyle dean of wls. . . a former home of Van Dyke. I love this aircheck and hope to hear more.
I remember getting this aircheck from my contact in New England at the time, and couldn’t believe that I got CVD’s first show at WRKO! Wow! Charlie was at some great stations, and truly made a name for himself in the business, but because he moved around so much, I do not think he was a “fan favorite” like Dan Ingram at WABC. Both great jocks, but mention Dan’s name to anyone in NY, and you get recognition. Mention Charlie to anyone who’s not in radio, and they will say “Who?” From what I’m told, he’s living in AZ, and is a deacon in his church in addition to doing lot’s of voice work.
Remember Charlie from WLS SUPER VOICE but always sounded LITTLE STIFF to me.HEARD HE WAS A GREAT GUY THOUGH. I WORKED WITH FRED WINSTON when he was 21yr or so old AT WING DAYTON 1967-68

This was done on my grandfather’s birthday. My mom was almost 17. Charlie Van Dyke is one of my heroes in the business
