QuickCheck: WINW 1520 Canton | May, 1986

Here’s a station which proudly proclaims, “We rocked you in the 60s and 70s”… then goes on to play soft AC and Standards. Kinda anti-climactic if you ask me. Still, it’s AM and playing music.

This sounds like it was one of those Reel to Reel Harris automation systems that we used to see in the days long before PC systems. If you ever worked radio in the 80s for any length of time you likely either worked with one of these or saw one somewhere. Their sound on the air is very unique, with about a half-second pause between each element. I digress.

This is a little over two minutes in length.

    “Look what they’ve done to my station, ma!” Wow!! For those of us who grew up listening to WIN-W (Win-Wonderful), this is like hearing our station go to the retirement home!! Who of us, from Canton and around Northeastern Ohio, can forget the classic days of jocks like Jay Williams, Todd T. Taylor, etc…and then later on, “Super Duper” Charlie Cooper, Dave Marshall, Dick Helpher, Ron Alison, etc, etc, etc? And who can forget the short-lived, but impressive stint of “15-Win?” We then stand by as horrified witnesses as we see what happens as radio goes through its metamorphose–the above clip being, in part, proof of that. (Has anyone heard WINW lately??)

    WINW was a great little Top 40 station in the 60’s and 70’s, getting good ratings despite signal limitations (and being a daytimer). The “Win-Wonderful” sign on Martindale Road stood weii into the mid-1990’s. WINW is now Gospel as “Joy 1520,” and has relatively new studios in downtown Canton

    I have a short (’scoped) aircheck of WIN-Wonderful (and me!) from about 1971. Now if I can figure out how to post it……..

    Good to hear this aircheck. I was the afternoon drive jock in 1979. Also was the D.J. at the Galixy Disco. Lots of great memmories of Canton, Oh.

    I would love to hear any other WINW airchecks. All I have are a few snippets from its heyday. It was a great little Top 40 station. cingram AT aol DOT DOT com (remove the second DOT).
