Taking a cue from their New York City sister station WABC, Chicago’s News Talk station 890 WLS dropped its normal format for one day and remembered it’s heritage as the Rock of Chicago! MusicRadio 89 WLS resumed where it left off, some 18 years ago (1989, technically). But, this was no sleepy rememberance with narrated airchecks… WLS really did this right, inviting many of the jocks who once graced the airwaves at the Big 89.
Here in part one, you’ll hear a brief narration by former WLS jock now imaging voice Jeff Davis, then Larry Lujack and L’il Tommy (Tommy Edwards) in the morning! Ol’ Uncle Lar’ sure sounds good after all these years! And, yes, somewhere in the first 3 hours of this program, there is an “Animal Stories” episode that you won’t want to miss! Perhaps the best part of this, the full, uncut latest edited year-end music montage that WLS used to air at midnight on New Year’s Eve!!! DON’T MISS THIS!
Listen, and be sure to comment on this most excellent of programs!

Just in reading the air check synopsis, I’m crushed that you failed to include the Grand Finale of the day….. ..Truckin’ Tom Cookin’ Kent! Can you get his show up in the web?
We’re not done with the Big 89 Rewind. I’m waiting on more audio files. Unfortunately I was on the road listening in my car that night or I would have recorded it here at home on my AM Stereo. But, we’re stuck with whatever files arrive in my mailbox this week. I agree, Landecker, followed by TK…. best live shows I’ve heard on the AM band in well over a decade!
FLIPPIN AWESOME FANTASTIC! I grew up on the Big 89 and learned everything i know from these guys! To this date there has never been anyone or anything that has ever brought us such excellance and outstanding radio…and what amazes me is how you all did it with the gear and equipment we had back then! I love you forever and i am forever grateful to GOD for you AND for this incredible aircheck and trip down memory lane. You really have been a major part of my life! Jim jt@wgca.org
I tuned in to the Big 89 Rewound after WABC Rewound concluded. I was totally digging listening to landecker when the stream died for some reason. I am not quite sure if I like WLS’s approach to remembering its past more than WABC’s approach, but both were a true joy to listen to and a great way to spend Memorial Day.
