Composite - MusicRadio 89 WLS Chicago | 1977
One of my favorite airchecks on the site, this composite showcases one full broadcast day - nicely scoped. The legendary lineup includes:
Larry Lujack in the Morning
Bob Sirott Middays
John “Records truly is my middle name” Landecker Nights
If you’re a big WLS fan as I am, you’ll really love this one.

Takes me back to a time when the only rock and roll you could hear in my little northern Michigan berg was listening in from far away Chicago. What great DJ voices!(especially John Landecker)
THE BIG 89..WLS AM IN THE 70′S-80′S WAS JUST THE VERY BEST ANYWHERE!!! GROWING UP IN DECATUR,IL. WLS WAS “OUR” STATION!!! I WONDER WHY THE EXECUTIVES –OR– OWNERS OF WLS WON’T RELEASE THE ENORMOUS AIRCHECK COLLECTION THEY MUST HAVE (PROBIBLY ROTTING AWAY IN A BASEMENT SOMEWHERE) SO ALL THE WORLD CAN RE-LIVE YESTERDAY. I WOULD EVEN PAY A FEE TO LISTEN!!!!…HEY, WLS, WANNA MAKE SOME $$$$$..???..MEANWHILE, I’LL KEEP DREAMIN AND CHECKING THE WWW TO FIND THE AIRCHECKS THAT ARE OUT THERE TO LISTEN TO. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY-OTHER PLACES ON THE NET THAT BROADCASTS AIRCHECKS FROM WLS??? I’VE BEEN TO REELRADIO AND LIVE 365..I JUST FOUND THIS SITE TODAY!..GREAT JOB!!!!……MIKE
I lived in Chicago from ‘72 to ‘87 after growing up in NJ listening to Philly and New York radio. WLS was certainly “The Rock Of Chicago” before the FM’ers rose up. And the jocks were world class, Lujack, Landecker (who had been @ WIBG in Philly in the late ’60’s), and Fred Winston, who I always felt was the “Chicago Dan Ingram”. The ABC stations of the era (WLS, WABC, WFIL) seemed to closely share format and on-air talent. Thanks for the chance to time-travel!
In the mid 60’s I was in college in a small town in northern Minnesota with ONE AM radio station. At night WLS, KAAY and KOMA were the stations I listened to. WLS was my favorite, Art Roberts was in charge of the evening shift then. I’ll not forget those great Anita Kerr jingles….. Double-Youu–ELLL-ESSSS….In Chicago!
MUUUUUU-SIC RAY DEEE OHHH DOUBLE-YOU-ELLL-ESSS (as sung by your favorite Dallas jingle singers) and the great Uncle Lar, Lil Tommy, Bob Sirott, John “Records” Landecker, Jeff Davis, Yvonne Daniels, etc. With apologies to WABC, KFRC, KHJ and others, WLS was the very BEST!!!
