Listening to this aircheck, I realize this was a much hyped up version of WABC. Listen… even has the “Chime Time” jingle!

No wonder so many people remember this station fondly!

I grew up listening to WGH. I love this radio station. Does anyone have any airchecks of WGH that they wish to sell?

W-G-H IN OLD VIRGINIA! Gotta love that Color Channel 131.

Dale Parsons (WGH DJ in the 60’s) has some for free listening at http://www.alohanews.com/wgh.htm He has pictures and other memorabelia there too.

Another source of stuff is the NNHS class of ‘65 site: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/wgh.html

There was a guy selling CD’s of WGH airchecks and other off air recordings at ebay, but I haven’t seen his stuff in a while. It was mostly the same items on Dale Parson’s site, though.

Boy did WGH have a blowtorch signal in the Hampton Roads area back then. Their smiling/frowning facial mask logo seemed to be plastered everywhere, even in movie theaters. The WGH sky studios on Mercury Blvd. were cool. One could ride by and see the DJs behind the glass. I remember their main competition was WNOR-AM in Norfolk.

I was working at WGH in 1969 (on WGH-FM) and remember J. J. Bowman well. It’s a shame this is played at faster-than-real-time. Bowman’s voice wasn’t that high, and he couldn’t talk that fast.

To the best of my knowledge, he did not attend the station reunion we had in 1993 at the Hampton Radisson. I don’t think we were able to locate him.

I remember WGH back in the 1964-1965 era when we lived in Hampton. It was always The Station my parents had the car radio tuned to. I still have an old jingle stuck in my head: “WGH…the best sound in DIX-IEEEEE!”
