CJUP 800 Langley, BC, Canada | 1987 (11:57) Scoped

Have I nothing better to do on Christmas day than create airchecks for you guys to listen to? You’ll really like this if you’re listening from the West Coast of BC. Here’s something you probably never expected: an aircheck from AM 800.

From what I can gather from my research, this was a short lived era in the history of the now silent AM 800. In fact, here’s a bit of history about this station:

History of CJUP

Just click the above link. The station known as CJUP changed calls in 1988 to CKST. In 1992, the station changed frequencies to 1040, then in 1994, the station went silent, never to be heard from again.

This does show, among other things, that contemporary music formats survived on AM, encouraged by Canada’s version of the US FCC, the CTRC. That policy did serve Canada well, but they have since abandoned that policy to one of moving most interactive AM formats to FM. Today there are many silent AM frequencies where there were once decent modern music formatted stations. Whether or not it’s a good policy, we’ll leave up to our brothers and sisters in the great white North.

I miss the AM Top-40s from Canada. In Bismarck, I grew up on CKY/Winnipeg, CKRC/Winnipeg, CKCK/Regina and CHAB/Moose Jaw. I was very sad the day CKY left the AM band.
This air check takes me back…to what got me into radio in the first place.

What fun to hear my voice on this clip - almost 20 years later - I didn’t even know the air check existed. Real email rowton@corgis.ca
