Here’s a nice look at an Urban AC recorded in the lead up to Christmas ‘86. What more can anyone say about soft Urban AC other than… it’s quiet. Compare that with some of the alleged Urban AC stations today and you’ll be amazed how much the format really has changed.

when i lived in chicago, i was a faithful listener of wlnr. this is the only radio station i can honestly say i’ve missed. the music was beautiful, the personalaties were so cool and had the mellowest voices. my favorite was shirley hayes who just seemed to “fit” the format and never seemed uncomfortable with the job. if there’s a radio station with this particular format in 2008, i want to know what and where it is. as i said, i miss it.
airchexx was a surprise discovery. i mentioned wlnr to someone recently and decided to look for information on it online. i was very happy to find you here and nearly tearful when i heard those little clips from my favorite radio station. thank you for the thrill.

i fell in love with 106.3 wlnr back in the day and was looking for the playlist. if anyone know of some of the songs that they played. please forward me a list.i have a couple of tapes of wlnr that i need to know the songs it would be appreciated
Yes, there were some songs I couldn’t identify in that aircheck. If there’s a list I would like to have a copy emailed if possible. I’ve been listing to this aircheck over and over, can’t get enough of it. This is a prime example of a Urban AC/Smooth Jazz Hyrbid format that was on the air before V-103 and WNUA came in. I think if WLNR were on a full power signal instead of a rimshot on 106.3 the station might have done well. If you have more airchecks of WLNR please post, I would love to hear a station like this today.
its is like a breath of fresh air 2 know that there are true music lovers and radio purists who know what a radio station should encompass.i too,have never missed a radio station as much as i have wlnr.from the soothing voices of the on-air personalities,to the very best playlist i think i’ve ever heard.the music flowed so effortless.the djs knew how to communicate and deport themselves in such a professional manner.we would listen at work from start to finish waiting with baited breath for the next beautiful selection of music.we were all better for ever having wlnr.no other station has ever matched up since.
Hi guys.good news!actually great news.I have obtained a list of some of a lot of the wlnr song playlist and transferred them to cd form.I also found an old cassette tape from my archives with some dj voices and commercial exerpts.this can also be transferred 2 cd.look forward to hearing from you,EJ.

This is a station that i truly miss. With the all female dj format,they played songs that i would love to find today. I’m glad i ran across this web page.
This station was one unique station, I really miss it!!!! Shirley Hayes was such a great talent, where is she now?
I really enjoyed this station and would like a copy of their playlist when available. In particular, there was a song they played, I beleive the group was call Windsong. If anyone remembers this, please provide the name of the song.
