I remember Smokin' Oldies AM 930. Oh... it was a good time.
Brother John was my favorite.
Remember Gill Angels on traffic?
My favorite female DJ was Bernadette on Sunday morning.

When Brother John died they had a special show. (I think I have that recording on tape).

At night, KRTH would open the phone line for anyone to make dedication. Then you always hear the guy George Aguilar calling in. Almost every night. Haha..

AM930 shaped my high school years. I was young and my heart was filled with Smoking Oldies. Good time and good memory. I didn't appreciate it enough. I didn't realize how good I had it.

God bless everyone.

Just need info:

Did Brother John die of a heart attack while working at Smokin' Oldies AM 930? I heard he did.

What became of Smokin' Oldies? I remember when it went off the air but I forgot why. Thanks, send info to my e-mail.

I worked with Brother John for about a year at K-Earth. He was a rare person, kind and sensitive, the same man off the air as on. I was saddened to hear of his death.

Brother John was a friend. I remember his Heaven is in Your Mind show on Sundays. When he suffered from a stroke he had on the air at K.Earth 101, I sent him an aircheck of my show, and I was told that while he was recovering, relearning to speak, he would play my aircheck over and over, trying to copy what I was saying. I will always miss Brother John. But will see him again in Heaven. :)

Man, it brings back some memories to hear this! Brother John was pretty legendary in LA, dating from the KPPC days with the Firesign Theater and Tom Donohue.

This is just prior to RKO's installation of KFRC's Phil Hall as PD at KRTH; the first thing he did was blow up the format and go back to all-oldies. I'd forgotten how disjointed this format was! Air Supply, Van Morrison, "Funeral For A Friend" and Stacy Lattisaw! There was no energy left in the station at that point. What a mess!
