Wolfman Jack on XERB, Tijuana Mexico | 1971

xerb.jpgHere’s the first aircheck we’ve posted of the late Wolfman! Heard on stations all over the Nation by the late 70s through syndication, Wolfman Jack was probably best known for his time on this high-powered boarder-blaster!

There’s a couple minutes worth of the Wolfman that I hadn’t heard before…Thank You!

  3. Cool. Thanks for posting that, Steve.

Was a teen in San Diego in the ’60s. Used to catch the Wolfman nights on XERB.

I was of the impression that he was broadcasting live from Rosarito. In part because of the live phonecalls he’d take and his immensely enjoyable quasi-lewd repartee with the the girls who’d call in.

Was it live? Or was it recordings hauled down or mailed to the station from some distant U.S studio?

Also, I distinctly remember him calling XERB “the mighty ten ninety.”

Used to do a party impression of him growling, “This is the Wolfman, baby, on X E R B, the mighty 1090. How’s yo boog-uh-LOO?”

But nearly all references I’m finding online tonight refer to XERB as the “the Big 1090.”

Maybe he said that, too, but it’s “Mighty 1090″ that sticks for me. Anyone else remember that?

ONCE BETWEEN AIR JOBS I was in LA waiting for my divorce to go thru. Living in La Puente up the Interstate. I JUST HAD TO LOOK UP “THEWOLFMAN” I did at his recording studio there in LA. As I got off the ELEVATOR he was walking towards me down the hall,,He ask me “CAN I HELP YOU?” I said I came to meet you,,I’m THEMOJOMAN DJ from back east,,he gave me one of the greatest COMPLIMENTS ever, he said “I’ve heard you on the air,, You have a GIFT,,YOU MAKE A LISTENER THINK YOU’RE JUST TALKING TO THEM AND THEM ALONE. I’ll never forget that. Sid Grubbs aka THEMOJOMAN(reg.ustm)

I drove all the way from PITTSBURGH,PA area to EL PASO,TEX for a JOB OFFER at XERF over in JUAREZ. THAT WAS IN 1971. They did the DJ shows in them days at a studio in EL PASO and couriered the TAPES over to XERF 100,000 WATTS 800AM ON THE DIAL (SIGNAL WAS NORTH & SOUTH little east a LOT WEST (FOR LA)THEY HAD TO PROTECT CKLW in WINDSOR (ALSO ON 800)I ENDED UP TURNING DOWN THE OFFER AND WENT TO CHATTANOOGA WGOW (TURNER OWNED) I OFTEN WONDER WHERE I’D BE IF I’D TAKEN THAT JOB. I TURNED IT DOWN OUT OF FEAR. THE FIRST THING THE PD & GM SAID WAS “WHATEVER YOUR INTO WE CAN GET IT FOR YOU” PLACED SMELLED LIKE “POT” WHEN I HIT THE DOOR. I NEVER HEARD ABOUT ANY TROUBLE “BUT” WHO KNOWS?? MOJ’

I first heard the Wolfman in 1966 on XEG. During this time he was playing R and B and obscure stuff that was NOT top 40. I loved him during that era. I was only 12 years old, and needless to say I was amazed every night sitting up hearing him WAY later than I should have been up. He was on from about 1 to 3 AM if I remember correctly. He used to advertise and sell roach holders for, as he put it, “all you people out there that smoke roaches”. Now as a 12 year old middle class kid, I had no idea what he was talking about. I pictured people smoking an actual roach… the bug! Funny to think of now, how innocent our youth… but that was the Wolfman of the Summer of 1966.

Here in the UK we enjoyed a radio revolution courtesy of offshore “pirate” radio, for those of you that may care to sample go to http://www.bbc.com then go to iPlayer “Pirate Radio Johnny Walker”, enjoy a touch of how us poverty stricken Brits grew up in the `60`s [still poverty stricken and supporting you guys in Iraq]

I can’t remember what year exactly, but The Wolfman used to record his shows at Quad-Tech Studios in Los Angeles, right around the corner from where I worked, KGBS at 338 S. Western Ave. Then the tapes would be couriered and sent via Greyhound to Mexico. I think the studios were on 4th or 5th Street a couple of doors west of Western Ave. I visited him a couple of times there after I got off the air. What a trip he was! I sure do long for the days when we used to actually have fun on the air, and nobody had more fun than The Wolfman!

Todays ROCK&ROLL listeners will never know what WE know. Back When a kid could TUNE IN WLS,,WKBW,,evenKMOX,,WLAC,,WABC(if you could stand BRUCE),,and through the magic of AM RADIO know things going on in all those cities,,,You sorta had the feeling YOU KNEW AMERICA,,,TODAY with FM dominating everything,,You’re lucky if you know what’s going on down the street. I worked on a couple SIMUCAST operations that were great.FM sounds better I know,,but hearing what’s over the mountain felt good.
