Back by popular demand, another great recording of 70s powerhouse 13 WAVZ New Haven. Who woulda thunk this AM station on the Connecticut shoreline would generate such interest? There’s a long list of alumni who frequent the other WAVZ posts on this website, and our longtime site friend and contributor, Andy Bologovsky decided to contribute more. Andy writes:
“Enclosed are a couple of WAVZ goodies from my ‘Vault’ for your website.”
I think you’ll enjoy John E. Walker from 12/1975 (Check out the incredible processing on that signal!). Hope the recordings bring out even MORE listener comments on the website!
Enjoy, Andy B.
This is a long aircheck. Its a “Motown Weekend” and they go back to the 60s a lot, but listen for PLENTY of 70s commercials, tunes and chatter from Walker, who sounds more like he belongs on New York’s 99x (WXLO) than in New Haven, but this Kopps-Monahan station was at the top of its game during this period – and no wonder!
This is a real gem. Thanks Andy!

God i miss those “little giants”in the medium and smaller markets!!!
Definite R&b flavor in that early disco era….and how about back to back David Ruffin songs on this check!!!
Id love to hear WAMS/wilmington del,Y115 Appleton wi,WYRE annapolis md.
WHO WOULDA THUNK IT……ANDY DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER WAVZ JOCKS IN YOUR AIRCHECK STASH? YOU SEEM TO BE JOHN E WALKER INTENSIVE……GLAD YOU CONTINUE TO KEEP 13/WAVZ ALIVE….GNARLY CHARLIE/AKA SMOKIN WILLIE B GOODE….THANKS TO THIS SITE FOR ALL THE COOL MEMORIES….
Heeeeey!! Smokin’ Willie B! (or should I say Cliff Rockin’ Canyon??). Dude, I’ve got all the New Waves jocks on tape – I just submitted this one because the sound quality is better than most of them and it’s unscoped. My absolutely favorite period at WAVZ was late 1972 through 1974, when John Long was PD and jocks like Mason Dixon, Brian Phoenix, Buzzy Hart, Tom Britton, Paul Robbins, Ron Foster, Bobby Rich, Cash Sunshine, Quincy McCoy, Pat Brody, Mike Dean, Bobby Scott, Bill Rock and the rest of ‘em were making
Q-format magic! I would tape the station like crazy back then. I even have a snippet or two of YOU on WCCC in July 1973. I’ll pass along a couple more WAVZ gems to Airchexx.com as time goes by. Man, I miss this kind of radio!
HI ANDY….WAVES WAS ONE OF THE MOST AWESOME RADIO STATIONS IN THE 70s FROM THE JOHN LONG YEARS ,THROUGH THE CHUCK MARTIN YEARS AND MY PERSONAL FAVORITE PERIOD THE PETE SALANT YEARS FROM 1976 THROUGH JULY 1979 UNTIL THE INFAMOUS FLIP.I CANT BELIEVE YOU HAVE SOME OF MY ANCIENT TRIPLE C STUFF.I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR THAT SOMETIME.BY THE WAY IT WAS CLIFF TRUCKIN KENYON,A NAME GIVEN TO ME BY THE LEGENDARY RUSTY POTZ..TAKE CARE AND MAKE WAVES DUDE……GNARLY/SMOKIN
Gnarly/Smokin/Kenyon, (whew! that’s a long name!).
Did you know that Rusty Potts is still doing his thing at WLNG out in Eastern Long Island? It’s a pleasure to hear him work. Also, I was going through my collection and found an unscoped hour of you on WFIF in Milford, CT. I taped it about 2 weeks after the Bicentennial during the dog-days of mid-July 1976. The imaging was “The Sound of America!” I’ll send out a copy of it to Airchexx. It’s not WAVZ, but it sure does have that mid-70s small-town radio feel to it. Carts and 45s. A board with black rotary pots. By the way, your ability to hit the post on any song no matter how long or short the intro was is just amazing! Sincerely, Andy B.
Great sound for an aircheck from 1975!
HI ANDY B….15/FIF WAS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING STATIONS I EVER WORKED FOR.WITHOUT GETTING TOO CRAZY LETS JUST SAY GOING FROM FIF TO WAVES WAS LIKE I DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN.I WORKED WITH SOME REALLY COOL PEOPLE AT FIF INCLUDING DENNIS MURRAY,JAY SCOTT AND BILL SHANE WHO ALSO MOVED ON TO THE LEGENDARY 13/WAVZ.ALSO WORKING FOR TOM SHOVAN AND RANDY WEST WAS A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE.WE HAD FUN DESPITE LACK OF RESOURCES.THE 1970s WAS AN AMAZING TIME FOR TOP 40 RADIO……TAKE CARE…GNARLY/SMOKIN
Gnarly/Smokin Willie B Goode — are you the same from WPLJ in the 80’s? I used to intern there at the same time.
