Public Service Programming on 870 WWL / United Broadcasters of New Orleans | September 8, 2005

One of the reasons Airchexx.com exists is to chronicle broadcasts of an historic nature. There may be none more memorable in American history than the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

On this aircheck, WWL is in it’s second week broadcasting under the collective umbrella of parent company Entercom Communications, LLC and Clear Channel New Orleans (click HERE for a sample TOH ID) - operating in a limited partnership arrangement called “United Broadcasters of New Orleans“. The studios are located in Baton Rouge, LA. Virtually every broadcasting facility in the New Orleans area was destroyed in the hurricane, and the programming on WWL is being simulcast over the few remaining radio stations still broadcasting in the area - broadcasting with a transmitter on emergency power with no studios available to originate content.

As demonstrated on this aircheck, WWL / United Broadcasters are virtually the only communication for the people who are left stranded in the desolate New Orleans area. Its an example of the power of radio (AM in particular) that can get the word out when all other media fails.

Hats off to the engineers and everyone else that made this possible. I have heard the stories of the across town links in Baton Rouge to get the signal “on the bird”, back down to the EOC in Jefferson Parish, to the studio in downtown New Orleans, and finally STL’ed out to the Xmitter. Way to go guys !!! True cooperation for the public good!

I listen to your broadcast every night. I am still as of this day in Bryan, Texas (10/10) and will be returning to Metairie this coming Saturday, I hope. My mother who is 82 lives in Westminster, a retirement community on Williams Blvd. in Kenner, LA. I had to stay here in Texas as her apartment was not ready so my husband returned home almost two weeks ago to begin the gutting out of our entire house. Like many the structure is fine, but we lost our entire contents including the roof and all of our furniture. I am not asking for a handout, I have insurance but you know how that goes. I am trying to find out how I can get a small trailer for our driveway to live in while my home is being reconstructed. It will be a least 6 months before we can live in our home and as of this Saturday when I return, my husband and I will have to live in our vehicles. I have registered with FEMA and have gotten the money in our account like they said (lets remember we will have to pay that back if you have insurance), but I have spent hours upon hours trying to speak to a real person about a trailer. My husband says he heard we do not qualify. Why???????????? We are not wealthy by any means, just hard working people that have worked our entire married life (38 years), we are not poverty stricken either, so are we now being punished for that? I am exhausted like many I imagine and am weary of staying up until 2 am every morning trying to reach a FEMA person. I need help, we don’t want to live in our vehicles, we would like to get a two person little trailer to cover us from the elements where we can sleep and eat and watch over our home while reconstructure begins. I heard they were giving out trailers for as long as 2 years to some. Is there help for us? I guess not.
