Jackson Armstrong on WNBC New York | 1977 (29:55)

The “Unknown DJ” - Okay, it occurs to me that this was used at least one other time for a jock on 660… No matter. Jackson Armstrong arrived on WNBC on this day in 1977, trying his best to be as inconspicuous as possible. But… for anyone who at the time lived in Buffalo, hearing “your LEEEEEEAAAAAAADER!, this was a dead giveaway!

Okay, this definitely was during the ‘NEW’ WNBC era to be sure. One has to wonder, considering the competition over at the alphabet station, had the folks at 30 Rock stuffed 660 full of personality and music like on this day… could ABC have been de-throned?

Naaaa… NBC execs were a bunch of stuffed shirts.

After this one-day gig, Armstrong was heard at KTNQ and KFI Los Angeles (one of a number of West Coast engagements), and more recently, morning drive in North Carolina - course that gig went away with the Oldies a couple of months ago. Actually, one could say Armstrong is in the midst of the longest running encore in radio - his night show on KB 1520 Buffalo (WWKB, to bury official calls in a stop-set). Your Leader is back, heard nightly up and down the East Coast.

Meanwhile, off the subject somewhat, the ‘first’ ‘Real Oldies’ station, 1530 WSAI is mere days from extinction. You guys in Buffalo, enjoy it while ya got it.

This is by far one of my favorite Jackson Armstrong airchecks of all time! He does such a great job, with high energy and personality…so who cares that he slips and says his name? To bad he didn’t get the gig!

First time I ever heard of the “Leeeeeedar!” I head an aircheck on a promotional LP called “Programmer’s Digest” in 1972 when I was in high school just hankerin’ for a carreer that allowed me to push buttons and turn knobs and play fun music and act ate up on the air(sound familiar?) Armstrong’s WKBW work was the best and I died laughing! Met the crazy dude a few years later when he was working at the former(and predesitined to radio oblivion)WIFE,Indianapolis and his style was the same…he was even more ate up off the air than on! I laughed hysterically!
Did he go to auctioneer school or was it just too many reruns of “Speed Racer?

We in Buffalo enjoyed it while we could, but unfortunately, the mighty KB has changed formats again. Who would have guessed that classic rock with classic jocks would be replaced by liberal talk radio? A double travesty. If anyone knows of an email address or website to reach Jackson Armstrong, I’d like to send my condolences. To the owners of KB, a pox upon thee, you cretins!

This by far an excellent tape on Jackson Armstrong. Being one who lives in L.A. since 1979, it reminds me when he was at KFI with the Gorilla. He pulls that act off well. By the way, what is he doing now.

I had the pleasure of hearing Jackson Armstrong on WKBW radio out of Buffalo, New York from 1970-73. I was living in Niagara Falls, New York. He was also on KFRC 610AM out of San Francisco, Ca. in the early 1980’s. He died at the young age of 62 in March 2008. He was great!
