Dan Ingram’s Last Show On 92 WKTU New York

And now, courtesy of Matt @ Big Apple Airchecks, Here’s a bit of Big Dan like we haven’t heard in a while. 92 KTU was, of course, New York’s first Disco station - in 1979. It morphed into an excellent CHR station, but just couldn’t hold up against Z-100 when it launched in 1983.

By 1985, WKTU was in real trouble and eventually flipped to Rock and changed call letters to the current WXRK - “K-Rock”.

So now, with K-Rock about to disappear forever with the impending flip to talk when Howard Stern leaves, lets go back to an era just before 92.3 flipped back in 1985 - with the King of all disc jockey’s, Dan Ingram!

I just got this aircheck from my aircheck buddy Tony Simon in Miami, who sent as a “gift” of sorts considering that WXRK is changing formats in January. Thanks to Tony for sharing it, and Steve for posting it! This Dan Ingram doing AC his way!

Irony in the news report. Live Aid was the end of WKTU. K-rock kicked off its new AOR format with an all day broadcast of Live Aid. After that, they started their K-rock format.
I don’t know if the people working there knew what was going to happen.

For more on Dan, go to the WABC site. Mark Simone interviewed him on Saturday night oldies a few weeks ago and he sounded great

I was never a huge fan of Dan Ingram although there is no dispute that he was “made for a mic”.
Ted Brown said it best when,”to paraphase” Dan is great at one liners or maybe two to get the intro in before the singing starts. (We used to call it “hornying in” in the old days…like a shoe horn slipping a heel into a shoe. But Dan always reminds me of Henny Youngman, (the king of the one liners) from
vaudeville days. Although,of course, as you know, Dan was and is a consummate King of his craft. And there can really be no legitimate argument against that notion.

What an excellent snapshot of great 80s radio. You have very good cuts from great artist (when they where new) and on top of that BIG DAN working the turn tables (Or like ABC, did he have a board op?) Don’t know, but still an excellent sound all in all!

BTW the only missing form the famous Dan Ingram acapella jock shout is the WABC jingle!

Love it! Dan sounds great and the format cooks too! Sad it was coming to an end. Are there any more KTU airchecks from this era with Ingram or others floating around?
