‘Dandy’ Dan Daniel on 101.1 WCBS-FM New York | December 1999

More from the archives. Here’s one of legendary NYC deejay Dan Daniel (WMCA/WHN/WNBC/WYNY) doing his bit on New York’s Oldies Station 101.1 - CBS-FM.

I remember well the day I recorded this. I was still driving a big rig for TRISM out of Joplin, MO. Coldest damn day you could think of to be delivering a load to Long Island. Anyway, I wanted a recording of CBS-FM, and had the foresight to bring a boombox and blank tapes. When I started the recording, I was about 45 miles south of the George Washington Bridge on I-95, and when I finished, I was crossing the Whitestone Bridge going into Queens. Did I mention it was cold as hell? At least it was warming to hear Dan Daniel!

Infinity shoulda killed another radio station instead of 101.1 ,I think this is a cool format but it be nice to have both CBS and JACK.

The discontinuation of 101.1 is a real shame. I’ve been listening to it since as long as i can remember! There was no other station quite like it. I’m 20 years old and the thought of not having it around anymore was really upsetting. I guess I’ll have to try the online streaming for a change.

    RIP 101.1 WCBS FM :’(

I am 30 years old and was a listener of this station for years. I was very young when my parents would listen to Cousin Brucie. We grew up with music in our house, and this station was definately one of our favorites. When I turned on the radio the other day I thought I hit the wrong station, I was wrong. I told my parents what happened, they ciuldnt believe it. Truly a classic, legendary station. I can’t believe its gone, just like that????? No station could takes its place!! so sad to see it gone!!!!!

Shame on Infinity–how can it be that they take an extremely popular format, including current news and conditions and live information–and try to force feed this market with JACK S____? They don’t know Jack about NY and they picked the wrong station to cancel. I’ve stopped listening totally. Who can drive their car and operate their computer at the same time???? It’s amazing that they can take a format like this, an audience like this, and just DUMP it.

    SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!!

I have bee listening to CBS FM since I was 17 - back in 86. CBS was truly a unique station with on air pesonalities who felt more like family. Not to mention timeless music that transcends the generation gap. Brucie, Mickey, Harry, and the rest will surely be missed by many. I hope the “new” format runs
    itself nto the ground.

I have been listening to CBS FM back in 1972 when I was 14 yrs old. This station brought me joy as a teen. If it was’nt for CBS FM people would never know The Greatest music of all Time. what a cruel thing to do. I’m not going to check out the new format. there’s only CBS FM, that goes to show you, nothing good last forever. I love you! #1

I started listening to WCBS FM On their First day as an Oldies station back in 1972.Back then, I had liked listening to what was then WPLJ 95.5 the way it was ,was cool. I was 16, Then when WCBS-FM gave us “the greatest hits of all time”, I was Hooked.I Grew up with those guys. With an Name like Alan Fried,You can just Imagine my attachment to this anchor of Classic Radio. And my appreciation, for all the nurturing and love that they put into making WCBS-FM 101.1 The Greatest Radio station of all time……..Hats off to all my CBS FM Friends !

Now that the new format has received two bad report cards in the arbitron, is
like #17 in N.Y. radio, it might be time for infinity broadcasting to lick their wounds,
realize, and understand their mistake, and bring back “:THE GREATEST HITS OF
ALL TIME” Enough is enough now infinity, lets get back on track.

  13. JIM DESERIO on February 23rd, 2006 12:14 am

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ! INFINITY DOES NOT KNOW JACK S–T ! TAKING AN ICON IN BROADCASTING EXCELENCE LIKE CBS FM AND SUBSTITUTING IT WITH JACK FM ONLY PROVES THAT THE SUITS AT INFINITY NEED TO BE FIRED AND RUN OUT OF TOWN ! BRING BACK CBS FM, DAN INGRAM, BRUCE MORROW AND HARRY HARRISON !

  14. Walter C. on February 25th, 2006 2:21 pm

Wow it’s like a major change, I hate change!. Gonna miss all those moring guys who tagged along in my tractor trailer thru out the tri state area. But no sense of hating Jack! I figure if you don’t like it then turn jack off.

I began listening to CBS-FM from day 1 in 1972 and i am so disappointed that the consultants and other suits who now control ALL of the radio stations I grew up with(WABC, WPLJ, WNEW, WPLR New Haven etc.) have completely ruined radio as we knew and loved it. Radio is so watered down, boring and predictable, I can hardly stand to listen anymore. Thankfully, there is XM Radio and my own CD collection to keep me from going insane. What a shame that all those people who listened to radio in the Tri-State area all their lives have only memories and airchexx.net to remind them how much fun it was to listen to the radio. BRING BACK WCBS-FM, FIRE THE CONSULTANTS

Having moved to Texas, I STILL miss Dandy Dan - would someone PLEASE respond with a contact for him? His memory recall was faster than a computer - and far more accurate! If someone contacts him, please let him know that “Little Red Devil” and “Devil’s Delight” are still doing chili cookoffs and would like to contact him. Thanks! Momala
