Dick Summer – “Mouth vs Ear” on WYNY New York

Dick SummerDick Summer himself checked in with your webmaster recently and was kind enough to send in a few recorded goodies for our listeners. Here’s a humorous bit done on WYNY sometime in (we’re guessing here) 1975. The contest is “Mouth vs Ear”, a segment likely done before the top of the hour news.

Thanks to those who posted comments about this aircheck (below), we stand corrected – this was erroneously described as being on WNBC – an assumption made due to the fact that Summer wrote in his notes along with the airchecks that there were some WNBC airchecks, the fact that the tracks weren’t labelled and the recording sounded like an AM station… so it was just a guess on my part. As my kids would say, my bad…

Dick has his own website: www.dicksummer.com, where visitors can order many of his “Loving Touch” CDs, which carry on the theme of his 1960s and 70s radio program on WBZ. Dick is also a pilot and owns his own airplane, which he’s quite proud of and loves flying…

Hi, just a couple of corrections. The station was WYNY and the year was probably 1979 or 1980. He may have even said 1980 when he was talking with “Barry Manilow.” Regardless, Mouth vs Ear was one of the things I miss most about not having Dick Summer on the radio in NYC, as well as his comedy winddown.

These Mouth versus Ear clips are from WYNY-FM and are circa 1979. The WYNY version of MvE aired Friday nights around 1130 pm to 1 am

I remember Mouth Vs. Ear!!!! I loved it! I was about 16 or so…
Is Dick Summer the voice of the Bender and Bender lawyer commercials? I have always thought that voice was familiar but couldn’t place it. Hearing this air check–I’m putting 2 and 2 together. Back when radio was FUN to listen to! (Not anymore).

OH MY GOD I remember when Barry Manilow called in!!!!!! I was very into him back then. I do remember this.

I used to listen to this in the car while driving home from my favorite “club” on Friday nights. I remember it was repeated again right after it ended. If I missed the beginning I would fall asleep to it into the wee hours of the morning.I really enjoyed it.

Wow. Great to see this stuff… “Mouth Vs. Ear” was great; it aired Friday nights on WYNY from 11:30PM… The show (which Mouth always won, by cheating if necessary) lasted an hour, and then there’s by a wind-down of comedy records.

I listened to WYNY in 1979 as a 14-year-old… I always looked forward to the show, even though I often fell asleep before it started, or shortly after it began…

For awhile WYNY replayed it again in the wee AM hours. Sometime, if I fell asleep before 11:30, I’d catch it again around 3:30 AM…

Summer was the best host on the station, which had a fairly decent lineup of on-air personalities. I still remember the songs they played that year; “Him” by Rupert Holmes, “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg, “What You’re Doing” by Captain and Tenille, “Music Box Dancer” by Frank Mills, “Hard Times for Lovers” by Judy Collins, “Reunited” by Peaches & Herb… It was very easy-listening stuff…

Summer was the one guy who stood out from the crowd. His “Love and Touch” and “Summer Secret Sneaky Sound” were great bits for such a snoozy station. He had a compelling presence on the radio, and made the tame playlist a little more interesting.

As I recall it the station started jerking his timeslot around, and his bits started getting trimmed in length. Then, he was gone, which bummed me out because I really missed Mouth vs. Ear.

Glad to know he’s doing well after all these years. Thanks for the shows, Dick! I always appreciated those brief years at WYNY, and never forgot ‘em.

Wow, I’m so delighted when the internet can connect us to the past in such a way.
Myself and my older brother were regular callers on the Mouth vs Ear show. I think I was around 9 or 10 at the time. One show, I remember calling in and asking this question to Dick, (How many black keys are on a standard piano.?) I believe we stumped the crew. I use to have tapes of me on the show but the tapes were destroyed by another family member over 20 years ago.
Someday I hope to hear those shows again. My brother and I would laugh for hours.
    Thanks for the memories.
    Gus
