Matt Seinberg of Big Apple Airchecks sent this along in a package with 4 other tapes back a couple of years ago. WPIX was under-appreciated as another FM top 40 station in the Big Apple. Little wonder why, with WABC on AM solidly at number 1 for so many years, and WXLO 99X right behind. Still, while this would have easily been a top station in another market, it didn’t quite make it.
We’ve heard lots of listeners tell us that they have fond memories of WPIX. It’s yet another station relegated to the scrap heap of radio history. The WPIX call letters survive on the TV side – today’s WB11.

Good aircheck. I place it at around February of ‘77. PIX would go AOR July 4th weekend of that year. I believe “Dr. Jerry” moved to mornings shortly befor the format change. Jerry Carol is infamous in NY for having voiced the Crazy Eddie ads which were ubiquitously found on NY radio in the ’70s and ’80s. Note the veteran air tallent voicing inhouse produced spots, Howard Hoffman (who believe was doing evenings), Mark Simone (overnights) and Dennis Quin (midday host). Dennis is still at the station by the way. Ironically, PIX’s morning man, Less Marshack, is not heard voicing any spots.
Still have my stop sign logo for WPIX fm, early to mis seventies.
A great radio station right up with the others.
