Emailed in to us about two weeks ago is this rare recording of Larry Kenny, doing his first night on the old WYNY New York on it’s old frequency back in the days before rap, hip hop or hair bands. This is the ORIGINAL New York 97 WYNY
This begins with the end of the overnight show, then goes into a complete newscast featuring newsman Jack Welby and an update on Hurricane David just off the Florida coast.
This is in great shape, with only a small amount of tape wear evident in the fidelity. Check out the welcome message from meteorologist Pat Pagano. I believe he’s still around!

This is an original recording I made of Larry Kenney, and in fact Larry got in touch with me through Ed Salamon, former PD of WHN. He didn’t have this aircheck, and asked if I would send it to him. I posted this on the Radio Insight Aircheck Board, and it’s been downloaded over 40 times!
Man, what a great aircheck. Larry Kenney, a super talent on a once super station, 97 WYNY! Kenney is best known for his work with Don Imus, and voice stuff, but he sure holds his own as a wake-up host. Very nice… not to mention the top shelf music of the day. Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Barbra Striesand, Glen Campbell, Lovin’ Spoonful and more compressed oh so nicely in FM stereo makes this a real treat. Labor Day was unusually busy at 30 Rock back in 1979, what with arrival of Kenny and the return of Kenney’s friend and coleague Don Imus.
WYNY was basically the last attempt of MOR in New York. Its lineup also included Steve O. Brien and Dick Summer. I don’t remember how long Kenney lasted but I don’t believe it was very long. Dan Daniel may have replaced him. Within the year WYNY would become a very successful AC station under the direction of Pete Salant, modernizing the playlist and tightening up the formatics.
Triple D came in about 3 weeks later to follow Larry from 9:30 to 1. He succeeded Larry in AM drive within a year. I’ve often wondered what happened there.
Great clip of Pat Pagano; yes, he’s still very much with us! He’s on my local station (WKBK 1290, Keene, NH) every weekday morning at 7:35 and is an AMAZING guy. People call in and ask how the weather will affect their travel plans; his accuracy is uncanny.
