A sample of WMWX Philadelphia - Ben FM | 2005 (3:30)

On Monday, March 21 2005 at 5:00pm, the Eclectic AC format debuted in Philadelphia as “95.7 Ben-FM”. The format began as a Long Island based webcaster Jack.fm before becoming a phenomenon in Canada. It features a broad playlist of hits from the 70’s through today, normally with irreverant imaging and emphasizing the fact that you never know what you’ll hear next.

In it’s different incarnations the format has taken on the names of Bob, Joe, Ted, Dave, Fred, Frank, Nine, and this week an all Country music variation of the format debuted in Indianapolis as Hank-FM.

Philadelphia’s version spotlighted here in a sampler of their imaging features actor John O’Hurley (better known as J. Peterman on Seinfeld) as one of the primary imaging voices. The Ben name comes from one of Philadelphia and America’s icons: Benjamin Franklin. Ironically though, this is the second “name” this station has had. A few formats ago, it was a Modern AC “Max 95.7″.

Sounds exactly like JACK in the imiaging. In general the music seems to have a slight urban lean. One thing that they got wrong was claiming to more or less be the only station to play Buffet and Mactchbox 20, sorry guys there are a lot of soccer mom stations already doing that. Suffice it to say the second I hear Buffet’s crap come on I change the station.
