Mike Cabral on WGNG Pawtucket | August, 1974 (1:47) Scoped

Now, from what I’ve been able to dig up on the internet about this station, it appears that this is now an Urban station. Could be wrong on this, so please feel free to correct me on the current format.

Actually, this aircheck from 1974 is really good despite the short length. IIRC, the jingles in use here were also used on WLAV and WCFL, among others during this time period.

I think I understand what happened. Mike Cabral must have been the news guy. I missed the DJ somehow, perhaps because the aircheck is so short.

You are, of course, correct as to the number of great jocks to grace the airwaves of Southern New England. Providence, IMHO, sounded even better than Boston in many ways.

RIP Salty Brine. He’s been gone, what, only two weeks now? I wonder how many folks realize Salty was Wally Brine’s dad (Wally Brine of WROR’s Loren & Wally show). Small world in radio.

On that WGNG aircheck from August of ‘74…There was no mention of the jock’s name but I believe it was “Willy Shears” who later worked elsewhere, including WNBC, as Dr. Michael Scarzynski. I last heard him doing some weekend shifts on WKXW New Jersey 101.5 & I believe he passed away a few years ago.

I had the pleasure of programming WGNG in 1979 & 80. Great memories and friends were left behind when I moved south to Texas to make some money in the business.
A true Salty Brine Story (I was on his tv show when I was 5 or 6) My mom and dad moved to Maine after I moved south. My mom was very homesick for R.I. One day she turned on the radio and picked up a station in Portland and heard a young man say “Rise and shine with Wally Brine” She realized it had to be Salty’s son. She wrote a letter to Salty at WPRO and told him of her discovery. With in a few days she received a three page reply from Salty and in the envelope a two page letter from his wife. My mother was never so touched. Both my mom and Salty are now gone. But, not forgotten. Salty was a one of a kind announcer and person. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

What happened to Joe Thomas? Is he still in local radio?

Wondering about “JT” as well. Was a big fan. I’m remembering his love of Roy Orbison.
    You guys remember The Videls?

I met Mike once or twice, the first time when he was a DJ at then top 40 outlet WSAR in Fall River, MA. WSAR was a neat outlet for the are it served, and today, as so many other stations have become, is just another toilet.

Skippy Ross who also worked for WSAR in the late 1960s (with Mike), now uses his real name, Bob Lacey, doing mornings with… well.. go here and see http://bobandsheri.com/
