Quantcast Dr. Don Rose on KFRC San Francisco | Memorial Day, 1977 : Airchexx.com
Dr. Don Rose on KFRC San Francisco | Memorial Day, 1977

We’ve narrowed down the date of this aircheck. Memorial Day, 1977. Here’s a *very* funny man! Dr. Don commanded morning radio in San Francisco through most of the 70s and 80s, and listening to these clips of a typical morning in the Bay Area, it’s little wonder why KFRC was solidly the top station in the city!

Dr. Don meant so much to many of us who aspired to entertain in this wonderful business we call radio. Frankly, however, there are few words that I can write in tribute that can sum up his effect on all of us – the best tribute we can do for him, is to do what we do best here at Airchexx.com – post a sample of his very best work.

In memory of Dr. Don Rose – Listen below!

The good material I hear on the new format is outweighed by the bad material and the bandinage of the bandinage of the two gentlemen I’ve heard in the afternoon is neither funny or interesting. Bringing in “Drake and Zeke” would only be a mild improvement overall. It’s about time to give up on commercial radio and explore options such as Sirius or alternatives.

  2. Steven Green says:

Personality is a great way to describe Dr. Don Rose. He had personality through and through. I wish more radio people today had a fraction of his personality.

  3. Steven Green says:

“If you drink and drive, you might end up with a car on the rocks.”

    That is good.

  4. Bill Stairs says:

Of all the markets Don could have owned, we in San Francisco were blessed that he owned us.

  5. Bert Brasher says:

these are FANTASTIC !!! are their anymore DR.Don airchecks available ?

  6. Mo Jo says:

..truly a Bay Area legend. I grew up listening to him on KFRC, ranting and raving about everything and anything in the morning. He was very entertaining, and he will be missed..

  7. Kerry Myers says:

I still miss the guy. Fortunately for his fans there are numerous video clips and air checks available. My first wife would only allow me to listen to him with headphones on. She did not last very long. Hope to see you on the other side, Dr. Don.

  8. Mike Fahey says:

I’m 61 and used to listen to Dr Don in the 70s on my way to work from Half Moon Bay. I heard him by himself and with Jane Dornaker. The programs were great. You couldn’t be in a bad mood while listening to Dr Don.

Are parts 1-3 Memorial day 1977 available on mp3?

  9. Bob says:

Dr. Don spent a few years at WEBC in Duluth, MN in the 60’s, prior to his later stints in Philadelphia and Atlanta, and his move to “legendary” status in San Francisco. I met him a couple of times while playing in a couple of local “battle of the bands” concerts that he MC’d. He was a gentle soul, a totally decent human being.

THE DR. WAS PURE GENIUS NO ONE HAS EQUALED OR PASSED SINCE HIS TIME. YOU COULD CALL HIM FUNNY, CORNY, SILLY, ANNOYING, THE ONE THING THAT DR. DON HAD WAS PURE RESPECT AND CONCIENCE OF HIS AUDIENCE & PUBLIC I WILL BORROW A QUOTE FROM AL DAVIS (RAIDER OWNER) AND I THINK REALLY FITS DR DON ROSE “TIME STANDS STILL FOR THE GREAT ONES”

  11. Leo Knott says:

What can you say about Dr. Don Rose. He was pure radio in performance, talent and presentation. I grew up in Chicago listening to great radio but San Francisco was truly blessed with an outstanding talent on the air. God bless you Dr. Don Rose, I know you have them laughing and scratching in radio heaven.

  12. Fred Schoppet says:

“If no one has done it yet, let me be the first to wish you a GOOD MORNING!”.. I first heard those words on my old radio in 1966 as a 10 year old on Famous 56 WFIL. I moved away in 1971 and left Dr Don. Just think of my joy when I relocated to the Bay Area and rediscovered my boyhood favorite DJ, I was in heaven. I left the Bay Area in 1989 and moved back in 2001.

There will NEVER be anyone like Dr Don and I was sorry to hear of his passing!

    THANK YOU !

    Fred

  13. Dan Rosenberg says:

Just missing you Dad…just needed to hear your voice.

For all of you who knew him as a radio legend, that was nothing compared to knowing him as a father, friend and brother in Christ.

See you on the flip-side Dad.

    Dan

  14. Jean Fisher says:

    Th-th-th-that’s RIGHT, Dr. Don!

I spoke with Don a couple of times over the air when he requested that an astrologer call in and give the aspect(s) that might have caused certain listeners to be winners of various contests… He was a consummate professional and a hilarious dude!

    Dr. Don-isms:
    “Sacratomato” for Sacramento
    “San Pantyhos-ay” for San Jose

We miss you, Dr. Don… You were silly and funny and you helped us get through our long morning commute with humor and grace…

  15. Willie says:

Dr. Don was not just a DJ, he was an airwave jockey. In the ’70s I’d listen to his Morning Show on 610 KFRC, then in the afternoon, while watching shows (mostly cartoons) on Channel 44 his voice was announcing the programs & PSAs.
He was doing Public Service Announcements long before it was politically correct, let alone before there was such a term.
Two Dr. Don-isms I remember are (refering to himself as The DOC-tor) & (when he’d say something his wife wouldn’t want him to say, another voice (or his altered) would say “You’ve got a big, BIG MOUTH!”).
Here is a suggestion to KFRC, ‘On his birthday each year, have a Dr. Don day and replay one of his shows (including the songs)’. That WOULD be an exceptional & well received tribute to him and for the awards accolades he and the station received because of him.
Dr. Donald D. Rose, his morning show did not GET awards, they were EARNED. Praise to The DOCtor and his big, BIG MOUTH & bigger heart.

  16. Beverly says:

I needed a little bit of laughter today, so I found this wonderful site, with those amazing memories of Doctor Don. I actually remember hearing these very same things LIVE, back in the day — how cool is that???

Imagine how much funnier heaven is now that the good Doc is there!
