I had the pleasure of hearing Mike Phillips when the Big 610 got started and I knew then he was special. He had a couple of "tricks" at KFRC before he got into programming fulltime. As a broadcast student at Chico State University, Mike Phillips was held up as one of the examples of what a Top 40 DJ was supposed to sound. I learned more about Mike at that point, that he came from Portland, Oregon, got his start at the legendary KISN (a station I wanted to work for), read his biography at Seattle's KJR. A funny Mike Phillips moment was at the goodbye of KFRC as a Top 40 station. Dr. Don Rose interviewed him. That was funny in-and-of-itself. Phillips was programming KOIT at the time and a brutal storm had rolled through the Bay Area the night before, knocking down the KOIT-AM transmitter. When the doctor asked Mike about KOIT, he confessed "our tower fell down," which led to a "laugh" track. That was probably the only "downer" in a magnificient radio career.

This was the KFRC "Launch Format." Drake did the same thing to setup KHJ.

Parade of Hits featured lots of gold...there were no full-time Oldies Stations in this era.

Drake grabbed contemporary heritage listeners "by the ears," then segued into and Adult Compatible Top 40 approach...that was a lean, mean, constant promotion machine...with great sounding jocks like MIKE PHILLIPS.

I was privileged to hear "MJ Phillips" on KISN at a weekender and vacation fill-in DJ in 1960. It was long before MIKE WESTERN exited and MIKE PHILLIPS could use his real name on-air.

Many great comments about Mike at www.pdxradio.com. Click Yak-Yak, Choose "Portland Radio" and look at the pros weighing on MIKE PHILLIPS.

Growing up in Portland meant not only did we get to hear MIKE PHILLIPS, but also TOM MURPHY, The REAL DON STEELE and JOHNNY WILLIAMS (KHJ). Williams preceeded Steele by about 1 year in the PM Drive slot at KISN.

Exciting radio!!!
