If I understand my source correctly, this Northeast radio Composite was ‘transcribed’ from the source reels to the Fuji DR 60 cassette used in this aircheck. This is a wonderful cross section of the AM radio dial from 1967. It is difficult to pin down an exact date, as there are multiple recordings of the same station from different shows, which leads one to believe that this was recorded over several days, perhaps during the Winter or early Spring of ’67. It’s obvious that this was recorded after dark, as many out-of-market stations are heard coming in very well.
Heard on this aircheck:
This starts with a short WBZ jingle, then into a WNEW jingle and some banter. Then, it’s on to Bruce Bradley‘s countdown on WBZ, where after a short while, it moves on to “Nightlife” with Dick Summer. After this, there’s a short clip of WOWO Ft. Wayne, news headlines with Glen Richards. Then, it blows through WABC with Bob Dayton, WLS “Radio Eight Nine Oh in Chicago“, “Right Now Radio with Joe Backarel”, back to WABC (Cousin Brucie, Bob Dayton), and a large segment of WKBW Buffalo. It may well be that there is not a more complete audio view of the AM radio dial during this Top 40 era anywhere on the web.

The jock who filled in for Cousin Brucie was not Bob Daton. Daton was long gone by ’67. It sounded like the DJ’s first name was Jeff.
The first WABC aircheck took place during the AFTRA strike in Spring ’67. WABC management (including PD Rick Sklar) were forced to fill in for the WABC air staff which was on the picket lines. The jock heard on this particular aircheck was Jeff Berman.

The guy on the WLS clip is Joe Bacarella, who was part of WXYZ Detroit management for years into the 70s. My guess is that clip was from the time AFTRA struck ABC.
I first met Joe Bacarella (1966) while working part-time at WCAR 1130, Detroit, and attending Wayne State U, Detroit. Joe was a helluva a guy. I haven’t heard the WLS clip, but I think Tony Clark is correct. Joe B was management at ‘XYZ and it would make sense that he would be at ‘LS to cover for AFTRA strike.
