Philadephia Top 40 & Urban Afternoon Drive Dial Sweep | October 1983

98.1 FM Philadelphia 98 Now WOGL WCAU-FM

Back in October 1983, I recorded Philadelphia’s FM Top 40 & Urban stations. This is from that cassette tape. Stations in this aircheck include:

WXTU New 92 (Mike Brophy)

105.3 WDAS-FM (Doug Henderson, son of Jocko Henderson)

WWSH The Top FM 106 (Bobby Rich)

WUSL Power 99fm (Jeff Wyatt)

WCAU-FM Hot Hits 98 (Billy Burke).

It’s just a small snapshot of what CHR & Urban radio sounded like in Philly in 1983. – Ellis

  1. Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Back then, there was a rumor that WXTU was going to go Country.
The former WIFI took the calls because they were close to WKTU, which was still on 92.3 up the street in NYC.
They were new wave as 92X prior to the switch.

    • I heard those WXTU Country rumors flying over at my radio station across town.
BTW, 92X was from WXTU’s Rhythmic CHR days. When they were Rock of the 80’s, they were using the handle “i92.”
