QuickChexx: Bobby Skafish, WLUP Chicago

97.9 Chicago WLUP The Loop

Sent in a long time ago by Robyn Watts, here’s a short recording of Bobby Skafish on Chicago’s Loop FM 98, as they called it back then. When was then? While not marked on the tape, we’ll take an uneducated guess of the early 1980s, perhaps 1981. Someone knows, there are clues. There’s no mention of AM 1000, so I’m led to believe that this was before The Loop AM came along.

This cut is taken from Cassette #S-180 issued by California Aircheck. Robyn Watts sent in a number of these for exhibition on our website.

Having listened to the Loop for many years, I would have to say the aircheck is from May 22, 1990. Little Feat had a concert that day, and in the one station promo they mention having a live feed of that show. That day also happens to be a Tuesday, and the song clips sound like it is from their trademark ‘Twofer Tuesday’. Rob S. was at the Loop at this time as well (before his migration to WXRT). The imaging also fits the late ’80’s- early ’90’s time period (in the early 80’s they didn’t have much in the way of produced imagining, the jocks did most of the station IDs in those days from what I can remember). Also the reference to ‘the Loop FM’ is heard in this clip..the programming was different from most of what the Loop AM 1000 had on in that era.
