…Music Radio 1200 WOAI, bringing back a few memories…

Curator’s Notes:

This is a “Super Oldies Weekend” at WOAI. Significant, format wise, because in 1974 there were very few “Oldies” programs, much less formats on the air anywhere at this point in the evolution of Rock based Top 40 radio. It’s not all Oldies music, as there are plenty of then-current songs in the mix. But to go back ten years and call it “Oldies” – well, that’s not something the youth of today are familiar with.

This is an historic aircheck tape due to the news items mentioned within the NBC Network News which airs within the first seconds of this aircheck tape. Jack Welby is the Anchor. Among the stories in this newscast, Vice President Gerald Ford doesn’t think Congress will vote to Impeach President Richard Nixon, then he comments on whether he knew about Nixon’s Phlobitis condition before the president went to the Soviet Union. You’ll want to hear his response, the rest of this newscast, and the music format heard here on WOAI. It’s our very first aircheck of WOAI, and I suspect, not the last…

At one time, WOAI was the only station at 1200 (at least in the US).
