During perhaps what was the best era for the Voice of Labor, WCFL was flying high mornings with ol’ Uncle Lar and his sometimes snarky attitude! Scoped down to a nice long aircheck of this particular morning, our biggest and best contributor, Matt over at Big Apple Airchecks really sent in a gem!
Lujack would go back and forth between ‘CFL and ‘LS a couple of times in the 70s before finishing out the decade at the Big 89!

While Lujack was the morning jock at WLS in the late 60’s and early 70’s, then again from the late 70’s until mid-80’s… he was the PM Drive jock at WCFL in between his WLS wake-up gigs. In fact, the second break in this aircheck references “tonight’s rush hour traffic”. So, clearly this check is from PM Drive. Dick and Doug was the morning duo at CFL in its final years of top-40 excellence. Regardless of daypart, it’s another brillant example of the man that once was, is, and forever will be… SUPERJOCK LARRY LUJACK!!!
Right on Joe Crain, I agree wholeheartedly with your comment but it a good aircheck with Big Ron O,Brien on this as well, another great jock.
This was recorded while I had my first radio job. A great time to remember.
But Lujack? He was not on top of his game that day. It happens, he was flat and not on cue. Super CFL was a tight operation and it unravelled, at times, during his show.
I was not impressed with his show, that day. I have been impressed by Lujack, but not today.
Super CFL is a keeper for the archives! Great to hear Uncle Larr in any form-still very funny, even when laid back…and Big Ron kicks it waaay up out of the park!! He’s smokin, and so are the tunes!how great to hear RRRed Motlow’s voice, too! …Great stuff from a great station at a real great time!!
Thanks!
So great listening to Top 40 radio in Chicago during the 60’s and 70’s. Could never forget Uncle Larr. He was the best but the other jocks at Super CFL were equally talented in their own right. Too bad todays FM radio could never match a 50,000 watt clear channel AM station of the 70’s! You could hear it at night half way across the country.
Rest In Peace, “Big” Ron O’Brien…
Ron, doing afternoon drive (and loving every second of it,) at CBS “classic hits” WOGL in Philadelphia, died Sunday, April 26 in a Philadelphia-area hospital due to complications of pneumonia.
“Big” Ron was … 56.
He’ll be deeply missed.
Warm regards and Peaceful Rest, our Friend
