The Top 5 At 10 – A Sample of WSSX Charleston, SC | July 28, 1998

95.1 FM Charleston 95SX WSSX Calvin Hicks Mitch Zano 2 Girls and a Guy in the Morning

I wish I could tell you who the jock is on this aircheck, but in the 45 minutes of the original recording, he never says his name once. No jock imaging is heard… nothing! But its obvious from this 6-plus minute scope that 95-SX is all about the music and their audience.

We join the station at about 9:40pm. Its amazing. 1998 seems like just yesterday, and all the music (there is no music just a bit on the front and tail ends) seems as fresh as it was then. In 1998, the CHR format was still a good mix of Dance, Hip Hop, Pop and Rock, although it didn’t seem so back then, compared to earlier years.

The Top 5 at 10 is the five most requested songs of the day. At the end, listeners have a chance to call in and name all the artists and songs in order in 9 seconds for a chance to win. This particular night, the prize is tickets to the Carolina Power Jam!

As I remember it from my time living in the Charleston area (the Lowcountry, as they call it), radio was very good, even recovering as they were when I arrived from Hurricane Hugo (1989). There used to be a CHR station called Q107, which was off the air for a long time after the hurricane devastated the area. They returned for one week, then flipped to Country as Bubba 107.5. Bubba. Go figure! Bubba’s gone today, and the dial is much changed even since this recording.

Hopefully, someone remembers the jock and can tell us who he is.
